Starter trivia : find the 2 differences...

As spring is here I'm doing some mechanicals refreshs on the car to be not stalled on the side of the road. My started was the original one with 229 000 km on it (142 k miles). The one on my SLO gave up at around 135k and it was a matter of time before this one stops working. I had a good used one from a duratech 3.0L which has the same part number. I then replaced it with my mechanic and it was a great choice.

I let you see why.


There are 2 differences. This ending with one modif on the car.

One on the left uses a slip wire connector to engage the starter, the one on the right uses a screw.

You got a point.

I was surprised as it is the same part number however. We had to modifiy this wire to accept the duratech starter. It can be considered as a maintenance upgrade because it will easier to find a replacement starter in the future. The SHO one has a ********* plastic snapping on the wire end of the starter. Duratech doesn't have it, it have a small red plastic cap snapping on this end.

The other is (but it can be an error from factory) mine on SHO had a missing center pin (below on photo).

We also replaced the upper bolt with a stud for a ground (which gave us many trouble, the ground wire was turning with the bolt...) by a simple one which hold the started and the ground in the same time. A lot simpler to unbolt next time.

You probably realize this, but it should be noted that the starter is not related to the motor, but rather the transmission used. The starter in the picture is for the AX4N, and there is a different model for the AX4S. Some Vulcan vulcan engines came equipped with an AX4N. Though they are more precious a find than SHO's in a junk yard...

Oh yes, youre right. I forgot this because my SLO had a AX4S.
