1996 Ford Taurus SHO, OBD II.

What is the reason for the sequential "dings?" going off?

Once the vehicle is started, you can put it in any gear (out of Park) and a series of 5 "dings" occurs 5 times, for a total of 25 "dings."

The car has been recently wrecked.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Is it a sequential code from the OBD-II system?

Is your airbag or overdrive light flashing? What about the check engine light?

Id take your car to a local autozone and have your codes ran for free.

I would say that is the PATS yakking at you. AZ won't be able to pull any codes for that.

I know with some fords if the airbag has been deployed an some one takes the bulb out of the airbag warning lamp it will sound an audable alarm instead of flashing the bulb. If I remember correctly disconecting the airbag module will stop the dinging.

This is correct. I had to do the same thing to my Plus to pass MD inspection. First I pulled the bulb, then disconnected the module. No more ding ding.

It was a quick and easy way to "fix" the only thing they failed me on.

This is not my vehicle. I am just doing some research for some family friend's of mine.

Where is the airbag module located at? Maybe I can try disconnecting it and see if that causes the dings to go away, then we can go from there.

So what are some things I should find out:

- Bulb pulled?
- Lights flashing (I did not recall any flashing)
- Airbag module needing replaced?

Etc...

Thanks for the help so far, it is good to think out loud.

Step 1: Replace the airbag bulb.

Step 2: Obtain the two digit Lamp Fault Code (LFC) by counting the flashes.

Step 3: post the code so someone with a factory manual can look it up.

The 5 X 5 beep code is a redundant warning that the airbag system has a fault since the primary indicator (bulb) has been detected to be inoperative. The exact same system has been used for years in many Fords.

AutZone and that ilk will be of no help since cheap scan tools can't access the supplemental systems. You need an advanced scan tool to do that and they start at a couple of grand for a Snap-On, for example.

 All you have to do to check the airbag lamp is turn the key on. Steve is telling the truth. The bulb has to be either missing or burnt out. Replace it and procede from there.

Airbag module access/replacement on the 96 and 97's require removing the dash.

As suggested, verify that the bulb is operating properly to start.

I just bought a 97 that did this. I found that the temp and gas gauges were not moving either and the overdrive button did nothing. I changed the fuse that went to the gauges and the dings went away but a check engine light was on then and the gauges started working. Might check that fuse out. It did not seem to effect anything else though.
