Went to start the car and it died, restarted it and once I gave it a little gas it would idle but not correctly...My first thought was CAMS eek!
But, I have heard no cam sounds and the miles are low. Everyone in awhile lately you could feel a slight vibration at idle...is it possibly a bad coil? I just hope to GOD its not a cam failure. Would the car even run if it was?! How much damage could be done just starting the car and having the cam jump?

My main question is...is it safe to drive to my work (FORD) about 6 miles away?

THANK YOU ANYONE WHO RESPONDS, I'm gonna check this like every 10 minutes cause I gotta go to work in about 2 hours

Understanding that I am probably the least mecahnically qualified soul here right now, it would be my bet that if you had truly spun a sprocket, you would think you were starting a Kenworth on a cold morning. If that is not what you heard, then did you get a Check Engine Light??
If not, perhaps try starting. If it fires listen carefully for the tell tale ticking. Sound like old time lifter chatter. If none present, you have another, much less serious problem. I'll be checking your progess. Other people on this list are much more knowlegable. I'll do what I can.

Ok, I just restarted the car and it did the same thing...turned it off agian. Restarted it, now its fine. Killed it and restarted it agian, now its fine agian! Maybe it was just the computer getting used to the warmer weather? I have no idea?! I don't think its a cam, but its just worries me. I kinda panicked there. Is it possible a coil could slowly be going bad? Or if it was bad would it just be bad?! Any other hints? It seems fine now..I'm gonna go give it the wash, I was orginally backing it out for!

I don't know what it was shrug , but I sure hope it doesn't come back. boink

IT's a GENIII. You have just knocked on the door of SHO Experience. You could have any number of minor issues. Get her washed and have fun. If it throws a code then get to AZ and post it here Someone will be able to tell you what the problem is. Occassionally mine does that crap on damp days where it just doesn't want to fire. Paul suggested stomp the pedal once, evidently it momentarily shuts off the fuel pump, anyway since that tip, it starts all the time.
Good Luck

The first time I had a bad coil it died on me and wouldn't restart. I waited 5 minutes and it restarted and ran fine. Ran fine for a few weeks before it acted up again.

Another time with a bad coil, it would sometimes die when coming to a stop but it would start right back up.

If you've noticed the car hiccup at idle before than chances are good it's just a coil.

Sad to say, but I couldn't agree more! :( All the negative press has made people think any normal noise is a cam failure and thier car is done for!

I concur, however think about two 1/2 years ago when virtually nobody knew. No, overreaction is not necessarily a good thing, but viligance is. I particularly like the comment about the dome light. When mine stayed on, I ran right up to PP and had the cams welded. Damn light stayed on! :D

Sorry not everybody is a genious like you when it comes to this type of thing. However, I like the light comment, but I think that most people (including me) would think cams when the engine won't run and makes weird noises. (Not me anymore, as my cams are now welded! thumbs_u )

One quirk?

Haven't you seen numerous people having problems with non-maintenance items? ICRM, torque convertor, coils, oil in the intake, etc.

I personally have had none of the "quirky" stuff go wrong with my 166k mile '93.

I think some of the quirks are attributed to the owner, some of it is just bad luck.

I personally love both cars, and I plan on having a Gen3 soon. I just don't think they're the trouble-free cars that some people think they are.

Remember, there are a LOT more old V6 SHO's running around than there are high-mile V8's. You think that's partially the reason you hear of more problems? My friend with a 80k mile '96 has already had problems with his starter, a/c, etc.

Later.

It's a taurus I know, but it's part of the SHO Legacy. I mean come on. The Gen. 2's can get beat up bad. While changing the suspension on a Gen. 2 I think we broke 3 bolts on each side of the caliper assembly. Problem: Ford MotorSports. The SHO will hold up plus the V-8 has a nice rumble, and pretty good pick up.

I really wanted to respond to this, but I have no idea what you're talking about. The Gen2's "can get beat up bad"? Okay, any car can get "beat up bad". You ever tried to remove original corroded bolts from a '96 that lives in the salt belt? Not pretty, just like all cars. You bash Ford but I can't figure out why!

Yes they make good Family cars, yes they make good trucks, but they are not quality. Why drive a SHO it's unique I don't like fords, just the engine. Yeah the Taurus SHO is cleaned up nice, but I still don't like fords except this situation. Sorry dude no burn intended!

I have been having the same problem with my 99 SHO, so i brought it to the Ford dealership and they told me my #6 coil is dead. So i ordered the new one form Autozone for 93 bucks.....Beats the 180 dollars the dealership wanted. This has been the only problem ive had with my car for the year ive owned it.

You should try NAPA. Word is that you can get them for $75 (there's been some conflicting news on that though). And there's some guy from Canada selling them cheap on e-bay :)
