I used Royal Purple before and I thought it sucked. My trans seemed to act finicky. With Redline it's been very smooth and good. So that's what I'm comparing it to. I was thinking about Amsoil severe gear oil but for now I have plenty of redline to change it with. I change mine up to 3 times a year. Fluid is cheaper than replacing the PTU or RDU. All of my fluid changes it looks close to new fluid but I'll keep changing it anyway bc it's cheap, easy and I'll dismiss fluid as a culprit for a failure.

Whats the cost per change? How many changes have you done since ownership? Vs whats the cost of a PTU?

If you factor cost over ownership, sometimes new parts win.

This is true. I'm about $200 in I would say ...I'm thinking that's a little high. But $40 or 50 a year is different than an all at once expense. This is only my second year in a row doing the super extreme method of 3 changes. Just bc I'm going to ask the car to give me EVERYTHING it has again. Bought with 52k. Paid to have a shop do it at 57k. Then I did it myself at 69k. And I've done it 4 times since then and now at 75k. I had the fluid tested also at Blackstone Labs. I need to drill and tap it at some point, I'm sure there's residual crap in there.

I like Royal Purple HPS motor oil. For whatever reason my car didnt seem to like their gear oil.

I've never tried their gear oil. I've been thinking about redline in my transfer case and differentials.

Yeah I knew you were at the extreme end of things. The average person would probably change ptu fluid every 20k or so. And probably the rdu once in a lifetime.

So, this thing is busting my balls a little bit...but the real issue is, no time. I get about an hour after work to work on it before I gotta get dinner ready, clean up, take care of kids, etc. Extra hours at work because of covid, so my wallet likes me...but this is moving at a snails pace.

So I'm thinking, I am on vacation next week, going camping in Rhode island, bout a 2 hour drive...so...I go, help set up, stick around for a day or so, then drive back...get the car sorted with a couple 8 hour shifts on her. Then go back.

Question is...when I reveal this plan to the wife...how will she take it, lol.

Id say listen....there's someone else and its not intimate yet...but she wants more of my time....and she's high maintenance.

One of the "benefits" to my job is I travel a lot...so this gives me a variety of "wives" but cuts my mod time way down.

Power Take Off Unit? WHAT? wrong. Power Transfer Unit is the correct term. Please learn what the **** you are talking about.

The PTU is always seeing the same power as the trans out put to the front tires. The PTU and passenger tire/hub assembly are directly connected via a drive axle to the transmission. If the front tires are seeing load so is the PTU. It does not switch on and off. It is a gear set, it physically cannot. It is always spinning and always sending power to the rear. ALWAYS.

The RDU coupler is the on and off switch. However it can only transfer IIRC 150 hp to the rear tires. Depending on power demand it is the brain in the Intelligent AWD system.

On the 13+ we can enable the Intelligent AWD gauge. You would be surprised while driving normal you will see the RDU really doesn't activate because there is no need too. When you ask for more then normal power, or your car is sensing your tires are slipping it may send power back but doesn't always. It could slow that wheel with the brake depending on situation. At freeway speeds and just cruising you are in front wheel drive the majority of the time.

The SHO/Flex/ and XSport are front wheel drive bias vehicles with the ability to transfer power to the rear on demand. Hence "Intelligent" AWD.
Dude you obviosuly don't understand physics and the transfer of motion if you think the PTU is always under load and i dont have the time to give you a physics lesson.

Clearly you are ******* ********. Mr. Power Turning Off Unit. You don't even know how our drive train operates, but you are going to teach me physics? Wear it out.

Let me break it down BARNEY STYLE for ya @SM105K cause I got a lil time now. Imagine you put a bolt through a hole and start spinning it with a wrench, thats your ptu when your going 90mph, you can throw all the force into it you want but its not under any real load or stress because that force isn't being transferred into anything that's causing any negative or reactive force.
Now, im gonn grab ahold of the bolt on the other side while you try to spin it, it just got a whole lot harder and theres a whole lot more friction where I'm grabbing it right? Thats whats going on when the diff coupler activates. Cry all you want about me calling the PTU by the wrong name, just like you cried about getting me mixed up with the oils even though my original comment was correct. Either way correct is correct.
