CPS (crank position sensor), id put money on it. Is your water pump leaking? What happens is the wp leaks on the cps and kind shorts it out. When you wait it drys up and then will work fine again. When was your last 60k maintainance?

I fully agree with "1993MTXSHO".
Same thing happened to me because my water pump was leaking straight down onto my crank position sensor. I just replaced the water pump and stopped the leak and I haven't had the problem since.

Too many heat cycles + Age = brittle insulation. I would bet that the housing for the CPS electronics(the plastic head of the sensor) has developed a hairline crack and as that crack expands with heat...it gets bigger.

Be on the lookout for scale buildup and rust below the waterpump. Even though you say you aren't losing coolant, it would not take much moisture to short out a CPS with cracked insulation.

it doesn't take a leak. It's designed to "weep" out of a hole at the bottom... that's why it's called the "weep hole". it weeps out that hole... right onto the CPS. Not the best of designs.

Unfortunately, not really. The upshot is, how long's it been since it was last replaced? As you've already found out, it's really not a part that you want to strand you on the road.

I'm 98.7% positive it's your crank sensor. It is probably one of THE most common maladies with this car, and it is pretty much guaranteed to happen to everyone on this forum (including me! twice!) sooner or later, if it hasn't already.
