From Valvoline MaxLife 5w-30 to Castrol Syntec 5w-30?

I've been eyeballin that stuff everytime I go to change my oil, I just don't have the balls to put it in my SHO.

Just for a little history, My SHO has seen Mobil 1, 5w-30 since 1700 miles-55,000 miles. (Before 1700 miles, it had the factory fill in it) After 55,000 miles there are no records all the way up to 110,000 miles, where I took over.

I know you all use Castrol GTX, but what about Castrol Syntec? And YES I KNOW SHO MOTORS DON'T LIKE MOBIL 1!! But she runs SO silent and SO smooth.....

Any suggestions?

Why are you using the MaxLife? If it is because of oil burning the Syndic will not help matters.

'Cause the commercial says for use in higher mileage cars! wink You mean, there should be a reason to switch? j/k.

As for the different brands of oil, just be sure to use the recommended weight (5w-30 or 10w-30) and change whatever brand oil often and you'll be fine. IMO consumers get too wrapped up in the marketing of the oil brands.

Nope, My SHO does not burn a drop of oil, not on WOT pulls, not even on start up. I just want to know if anyone else is using it in their mid-mileage SHO motor.

Synthetic oils like Mobil1 and Royal Purple are almost exclusively Poly Alpha Olefin (PAO) basestock (Group IV). By comparison, Castrol Syntec blends are about 10% PAO.

I believe one of the strong points of regular (dino) Castrol GTX is the healthy dose of moly, zinc, and phosphorus that is in the additive package. Assuming Castrol Syntec has the same or similar additive package, then what you'd be paying extra for is that 10% of PAO synthetic oil.

If you like the idea of Castrol in your engine, have you thought about using Castrol GTX High Mileage?

I switched to the Castrol GTX about 2 oil changes ago from Valvoline and am very happy with the results... the oil at change time has been lighter in color and the motor seems to run quiter at idle. As far as the high mileage I think that just has additives that help if you are burning oil, but you are not so why pay the extra 50 cents or so a qt if it is of no use or benefit? I burn a 1/2 qt between changes and did'nt think it was worth it, though I do spend the extra dime on a Mobil 1 filter.

I do not think you will note any difference between the two oils. If you are not seeing any consumption and are changing it every 3k I do not think it matters at all.

So what has more moly, zinc, etc.:

Valvoline maxlife or Castrol GTX High milage?

Or Synthetic?

Where would I find this info?

Why don't they just list the ingredients on the bottle like they do on cat food?? rofl

My engine did not like switching from Castrol GTX to Syntech at 50,000 miles. I tried a few changes of it and found there to be more noise (the sound of no lubrication) on start up and more oil leaks. Back to Castrol GTX for the duration. And it has been a long duration.

Uh, what are you talking about?

Mobil 1 is the recommended oil. No carmelizing. use a 5 0r 10w-30 SYNTHETIC and you will be ok. Castrol is fine, Mobil 1 is better, and Royal Purple is just day-um expensive.

Sweet! Another "oil" thread. My car (I'm 2nd owner) has had Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synthetic 10w-30 in it since day 1. Oil changes every 3000 miles. I am doing rod bearings in the next month, and will post pictures.

I like Valvoline because of the free top-offs. Since I drive it fairly hard (it's hard to drive like an old lady when the car sounds soooo good at full song), I burn 1qt/1000 miles, and I am a cheap *****. :D

I am now using the high mileage Castrol GTX in ol' smoky the '93. Was going through a quart every 700 miles but now am at over 2000 miles to the quart.

I would not use Mobil One 5w30, to me it is just too thin and test out to be more like a 5w25 oil. Otherwise in my other non-oil burning cars I use Amsoil.

If you want all the oil info you can handle go to

http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Beware they don't like the Castrol company for their past marketing techniques. Although the new German Castrol (GC) has been the hot oil to use for the last 6 months or so over there.
