Having a wierd problem with a 98 Taurus with the 3.0 V6. It is not my car but I am posting this for someone else. I am assuming the shifting linkage/mechanism is same for the v6 & v8's, but not positive. When the car is cold like in the morning when you first start it up, the button on the shifter does not go in, or it goes in really hard to shift it out of park. For some reason the car needs to warm up like 10 minutes before you can actually move the shifter to get it out of park. Anyone else have a problem like this? Is it something with the brake that the car does not think it is applied to be able to shift out of park? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Assuming the shifter lock is releasing I would suspect the cable that goes up to the Transmission Range Sensor.

Okay, I had this problem on this particular car again last night. It was parked in the garage after being driven a couple of hours earlier. I go out into it and start it up and try to shift out of park to reverse and the shifter will not move cause the button will not push in. No matter how hard you push it will not go in. The brake was pushed in too. It must be something that is binding or holding this button from going in. Don't know?? Is there a way to take the center console apart or the shifter mechanism from inside the car? Wierd.

If you BOO (brake on/off switch) switch is not working or if your brake lights are not operating than the shift saftey interlock will not release the button. This prevents gear selection. You can get around it to for emergency use by selecting neutral prior to starting the vehical. Then start the car and select the proper gear.

Could also be a bunch of Coca Cola that got spilled in there. It's pretty common on Ford floor shifter cars that get doused where the shifter will operate poorly when temps get close to freezing or lower, but free up once the heater has been running a bit.
