The shifter on my 95 MTX has been giving me trouble and I'm not finding images of what part could have failed. The shift bar, that the shift **** attaches to, spins/turns, not holding it's intended shift pattern. The previous owner said it was due to the failure of some small plastic retainer. Does anyone have an image or part number to refer to?

(...hopefully this is this the right section to post this in)

When the shift lever spins freely its because the plastic in the center of the shifter has failed. As far as I know it is not servicable. You will need a replacement shifter.

Thank you both! I will look into purchasing a replacement, but also wonder if this is a piece that could be 3D printed.

Since I'm still able to shift, I'll wait till I have a replacement before tearing into it.

(Edit: It's my daily driver, so I was hoping it would be something quick and easy.)

My car does the same thing. There's a plastic bushing at the bottom of the gear lever inside the box that has split. SHO Nut used to sell them, but not any more. Mike Stimson of SHO Source is looking into making some.

That's great news, I'd be interested in a couple of them!

Would there be any specific part in the shifter that gets worn that would effect shifting into first and second? Not TOB related pressure plate finger wear, shifts into reverse, 3-4-5 all fine.

If the clutch pedal is well off the floor when the clutch starts to grab, it means it's fully disengaging. In which case it's worn synchros / blocking rings inside the transmission. Both obsolete. Two tricks for getting into first:

- Put it into second, then first without taking your foot off the pedal
- Foot on clutch, gently push the lever towards first, lift your foot just a tad to nudge the internals. Should then go in.

Thanks Nick. In this case both the 1-2 synchronizer and the blocking rings have less than 100 miles, D4 fluid. Does seem to be getting better the more I drive it.
