Was looking around a little bit for a new shift **** and didnt really know or see a whole lot out there. Anyone know what the pattern is? Like if ones out of mustangs or other fords work etc?

Mustang knobs work, but you have to enlarge the hole at the bottom of it due to the design of the shifter.

**** selection is a bit limited. I can't remember the thread size off the top of my head, but there's the stock Mustang knobs (up to '09, don't know if they've changed the thread size for the new model), those "cue ball" knobs, the SHO Source aluminum knobs, and maybe a few more assorted ones. I haven't seen anyone with a TWM, but I believe they can make knobs in the SHO thread. They've a good selection, but they're pricey. http://www.twmperformance.com/
I had the newer Mustang **** (05 and up) on a '90. It threaded on with no modification, but wouldn't lock in place, so I set it in place with Loctite. Major improvement over the stock **** IMO; I find the stock **** to be fairly uncomfortable and most examples are worn out and squishy. The Mustang **** on the other hand is firm and feels much more ergonomic and pleasing to shift with.

I bought an OEM reproduction one from 50resto.com and it's decent quality and looks just like an OEM one, but I am having an issue with the threads also. It screws on but the threads seem too short....at it's tightest point no matter what position I screw it on, it's about 45 degrees pointing to the left of center....should I take a saw to the threaded rod and saw a small portion off so it tightens straight?

You can always get hold of a Cue Ball(your choice of design) and, with a drill press, set up your own shift ****. This is how I did mine:

Again, Mustang knobs don't work without opening up the hole on the bottom - jeremy, that's one reason yours doesn't fit.

The 99 - 04 Mustang leather ****, XR3Z 7213 BA, fits OK and is a reasonable price ... about $32 from Team Ford Parts ($39 retail). I have one on my 95.

Ive got a few mustang and shelby knobs. One from an 05 gt premium or premier package is a direct screw on n go replacement. Shelby knobs need to be opened or the shifter be trimmed down.

Thanks Bob. It was just a low-buck model I found on Ebay. I have it installed over the factory boot, hoping that will give it some additional durability.

The first one says it's either 12x1.25 or 12x1.75 thread, I would assume it would fit. The second one doesn't say, and I'm not sure what the Mustang thread pitch is...
The main problem with installing different shift knobs on our cars is getting the **** to thread all the way down to the shoulder, holding the top of the boot in place. That's why some people have had to drill and tap the aftermarket shift **** deeper.
