My car will not start.
I don't mean it won't turn over or crank, I mean the key will not turn to the "Run" position in the ignition.

I just drove it 5 minutes before, and I was having a problem with getting the key out. I know that if the steering wheel is slightly turned it won't unlock the key or let you turn the car on, but the wheel is straight.
What I find strange is the wheel will not lock up when you turn it with out a key, it spins freely (or at least as freely as it can without power steering).

I need to get this fixed asap and I'm completely stumped when it comes to little things like this.

If I have to replace the ignition switch, how much will it cost and will I need to get new keys made?

Anyone else have this problem?

You can buy a new lock cylinder with keys at AutoZone for about $20. Of course, you still need to be able to turn the key to run to replace the cylinder.

The column lock can still be preventing the key from turning even if the wheel is perfectly level. Try firmly moving it in both directions as you try turning the key.

I'm assuming by your post that you are able to get the key into the lock cylinder OK, it's just that it's not turning?

Yeah I got it in the cylinder but it isn't turning.

Anyways, forget about it. I figured out that it was the key lock that broke and prevented me from turning the key. I eventually just forced the key into the run position and it works.

Makes a damn good security system though  No one can figure out how to start my car now.

I'd still recommend replacing that lock cylinder ASAP. Otherwise you know that it will completely fail at the absolute least convenient time.
