Back in Michigan ... again.
Well, my friend's 92 STILL has the secondaries stuck open. We've replaced everything but the secondary assemblies themselves, but we've inspected and tested them time and again, and they are 100% fine. We've inspected and tested all the hoses, once again there is no leak.

There is not any problem what so ever with the mechanical aspect of the secondary system. We're only left with electrical...anyone have any experience with this...perhaps a similar problem? We've ran codes...it seems to me that if there was an electrical problem it would show up. At this point we don't know what to do...anyone have any advice on this?

The secondaries are 100% vacuum driven/ Electronicaly controled. You need to check your manifold to make sure it is creatimg enough vacuum pressure to close them. There is a regulator (INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL)that dumps the pressure to allow them to open when the engine is operating make sure it isn't malfunctioning. If you have a restricted exhaust the car can't make the correct vacuum. Check the xecondaries to see how much vacuum it takes to close them by connecting a vacuum pump to them and checking to see when the close.

One thing that'll help too is to stop spending every waking moment with the woman!! :p

Hey Chris, if Greg doesn't get around to the SHO anytime soon, would you say anything if it just randomly disappeared? wink

Naval_Avi8tor,

Isn't there still the electronic part of it? Doesn't the computer tell the regulator when to open?
What if it's telling the regulator to stay open?

Yes I posted Electronicaly controled. They are normally open and vacuum closed. As soon as the car starts and builds vacuum they close. Ethier the car is not building vacuum (restricted exhaust) or INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL is recieving a signal to dump. One thing you might try cause I not sure which way the INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL operates yet is disconnect the electrical connector to the runner control se if it alows the runners to close. BTW the INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL is mounted tbetween the small vacuum acumulator and the DFPE. Its what the vacuum tube from the secondaries T runs too.

Dont recall what you look like from the Portage Library meeting but I have the 95 ATX looking just like Greg's.

I was over Gregs place and parked outside their carports....I think the neighbor's were wondering how the heck Greg got the car out of the Garage seeing as how it was blocked in by their Van. In fact I think they were just plain surprized to see that ride in running condition.

I've tried all the above...the butterfly assemblies themselves are 100% fine. There are no vaccum leaks anywhere. Fiddle with the plug and nothing happens, they're still open. There is no LPM on the car, the exhaust is stock save for Dynomax mufflers. I don't believe there is a restriction in the exhaust 'cause the car still pulls very strong once the RPM's get up there.

It's a mystery.... shoot

I've had this happen on my 89..ended up being the Secondary Vacuum Solenoid (referred to as the IMRC by naval-Avi8tor), the switch in the back of the intake, next to the vacuum canister.
It's supposed to switch to reroute the vacuum between idle and 3600, which will close the secondaries. Check for current at the plug when the engine's at idle. If that's ok, bypass the switch and connect vacuum hoses directly to the canister, do they close now?
BTW, if the switch is bad, let me know, I have a spare one.

Thanks you beat me to it. Just be carefull as I don't know if the Secondary Vacuum seloniod send the full amount of vacuum to the secondary actuator. Wouldn't want you to blow out a diaphram. I would start the motor and then slowly atach the hose and if you see them close disconnect the hose. Don't allow the vacuum to rupture your diaphram. I'll check on the test procedure for the seleniod.

There maybe build up(like on throttle plate) that needs to be cleaned off as it maybe jamming them open.

Do you know if it`s bad in the butterflies,or is the problem vacuum related?
