So im driving down the road, with my friend behind the wheel, and he is getting a kick out of how much power my SHO has, he is very impressed, even though he himself drives a mustang. Hey Pete, he says, it has a great power boost from 3900 to 5000 rpm, and he shifts at 5k a few times. Then he pulls to the side of the road, im like, whats up? he's like, your engine is dead...
we quickly diagnose it to be the timing belt.
now i know that this is a non interference engine, so the valves did not self destruct, and so we drag it home, and i figure, 45 bucks new belt? 400 bucks from mechenic? i opt to do the job myself. takes me a while but in the meantime i get a lot of experience
so then im finally done (at like 2 in the morning), im real happy, i take it out and do a few drag strip runs at a local parking lot and the thing seems to have more power then before. so i take it home, and fall asleep. i show it off to a few friends the next day. I remember hitting a rather large puddle one time. Big deal, i think, ive hit puddles before. the day after that, the thing idles with way too many vibrations, doesn't go above 40 mph, gets 10 gallons per mile, check engine light comes on, and in general is very very weak. I think maybe it skipped a tooth, so i tear it appart (takes me an hour this time, concidering all the experience i got). There dots on the pulleys are right where they should be, the belt is a lil loose though, so i tighten it. I put it back together and it still gives me trouble. so i buy a code reader, do a code scan and it tells me that the oxygen sensors are way out of range. well, no duh, something is dumping way too much gas into the engine. thats how far i got on my own. after this i have no clue where to go, so i turn to this forum.
Could it be that it skipped a tooth and bent a few valves, which are not closing all the way?
could it be that the puddle messed up the engine computer or something else which opens the fuel injectors too much?
could it be that the cold water on a hot engine warped the heads or block and now compression went out the door?
maybe water entered the gas tank and to make up for it, the engine sends in more gas?
or the water trashed the o2 sensors and now they tell the computer to dump more fuel in then is needed?
or maybe the wet clutch doesn't grab like it used to.
I have no clue what to do from now on and i need the advice from someone that maybe has experienced this problem before and can tell me what needs to be done. Please, if anyone can throw any advice my way i would appriciate it.
