It could be several things. Let start off with the plugs and wires. What brand are they and when have they been replaced? Next check the plug wells for oil or water, might need to reseal them. Also put the year of the car in to help with the solution.
Let us know what you find. Also consider getting the proper FACTORY shop manual. It is very much needed!

Welcome aboard. One helpful request-go back to your profile and put in some info. like model year, any modifications, etc. in a signature to help others identify problem areas.

That is a great SHO model year. Unfortunately, with a car that old and the previous owner being abusive may require a good amount of maintenance money to be sure everything is back within spec.

There is a search function at the top of the page. Search for 60k to find the maintenance procedures that many should recommend for your car. The whole routine can be expensive in parts alone. You can do it in stages over time to spread cost if that is a concern. I agree new plugs and wires and checking for moisture in the plug wells is the first order of business.

newshoman,

Welcome to the forum frm another local guy!

I can feel your pain about a car that wasn't taken care of before you got it. My $200 SHO was one phone call away from the junkyard. The PO was just going to donate it to a charity and take the tax deduction. I gave her what the deduction was actually worth in real dollars on her tax return.

Now, over $2000 in PARTS later, I have a car that I drive every day. The suspension, steering, air, heat, interior, and a few other systems are repaired now. It still looks somewhat ratty on the outside due to rust and some wear and tear, but it still screams even with 207K on it.

It sounds like your intake manifold runners (butterflies, secondaries) are't consistently closing and opening. They should close when the engine starts and should open at 4K RPM. Check those first.

If you need help, email me.

Steve
