Some 91's and all 92 & up had rod shifters. Cable shifters were on all 89, 90 and early 91's.

The trannys from 1989-1995 are interchangable with each other, but only the 89-5/91 had cables. You should be able to use a cable tranny in needed and put your rod shifter on it anyways. They may have asked because they may have the same part #`s since they are basically the same, but didn`t know the 92`s had the rod because they aren`t SHO savy.If you can take the trip to upstate NY,Mark Nunnally rebuilds/sells good tranny`s and is VERY reputable.

I am somewhat curious as to why it makes a difference. The transmissions are the same. Only the external shift linkages are different. Replacing the transmission shouldn't touch the linkage except to disconnect/reconnect it. They aren't going to replace the linkage, so why does it matter?

My 1/91 came with the cable linkage and my first upgrade was to install the Ford Motorsport rod linkage.

the only difference in the tranny's is where the linkage connects.

Most boneyards keep records of changes from year to year in cars, ie if you ask for a SHO tranny they'll ask you what year, and if you have a cable/rod shifter. It's just a deal where they are trying to cover their butts so they don't sell you the wrong part (they are unaware that all 89-95 MTX trannies will fit in any 89-95 SHO, regardless of shifter).

The only visable difference is the early tranny's have a boss "shelf" on the front, the later years do not. It's not a big deal, it'll still fit in any SHO. Also starting in '92 they case halves have F2xxxx casting codes.

FWIW I have several MTX tranny's. I'm actually rebuilding one for a guy right now. I'll be traveling through MD this weekend, if it's a rush rush deal for you shoot me an email.

Hey man, that hurts. I have been in the used parts business long enough. (some people call us junkyards) Most yards across the country have "rookies" answering the phones. They are only as good as the computer system is.
If any of you on this forum need parts, or are interested in interchangeability, email me at [email protected]. As I said...I love my car.
