This thing hasn't worked since I got this car. Push the button and it doesn't do anything... no sounds, no nothing. Anybody have some info on this thing...removing it, repairing it, fuse location, plug location etc. I wanna fix this thing and then proceed to never use it ha.

I pulled up all the info on removing it etc. Sure enough, module was unplugged. I plugged it back in and tried it. The sunshade goes up just fine and stops, however when it comes down it gets to its closed position and then continues to try and pull the sunshade down. If I apply pressure i believe it sees an "obstruction" and cuts the power to the motor and thus it stops clicking. Anybody else have this issue? Seems like the motor itself is fine and powerful, it just isn't seeing its fully closed position. It looks like the one side is slightly higher than the other as well.

Common problem that is why it was disconnected. Cost like 750-1000 to replace if I remember right.

Sounds like whatever limit switch or circuit breaker detects the end of travel is not functioning correctly. Has anyone taken one of these apart to see what tells the motor to stop?

Rod,

Already ahead of you. Took the motor apart and as expected, one broken tooth on the big gear. What i found interesting is that the gear is in fact metal and i THOUGHT i remember someone posting they had replaced the gear before but I am not sure. I am unsure of what tells this thing to stop but I would imagine that repeated abuse in the stopping position eventually chipped the tooth. However it it is possible that the tooth chipped and then it was never able to achieve its closed position and that is what caused the clicking.

Yikes, that's pretty wild. That appears to be a rather specialized gear, not something that you'd be able to source from McMaster-Carr or similar unfortunately.

I see a website selling a multitude of gears that I may contact in regards to getting a new one, if its even worth it. I can ATTEMPT, and i stress that word, braze it back together but being so small I highly doubt I will be able to. If i do, it'll take some work with a file to get the tooth looking correct again but depending on what I can save by doing it, i may try it. I really have nothing to lose so. Even if I can get it to work for testing purposes (to determine if the module is at fault or whatever) I would be happy.

The gear looks symmetrical - what would happen if you installed 180 degrees maybe the missing tooth can be skipped.

I fixed it. I mig welded the tooth back on (that was realllllllly fun, let me tell ya), filed it down to as close as I could get it. Put it all together and it works like a charm. The teeth are by no means perfect but I just couldn't put the stupid thing back in without attempting to repair the tooth first.

That's good for a pat on the back and a bit of an ego trip. Hopefully that ends up being a long term fix.

haha nope, used a small miller mig welder. I actually found it wasier to weld the tooth to another exiting tooth, they tack the edges with really low heat. After that one done, I took the dremel and cut the teeth back into two separate teeth. I verified the gears mated together well enough to grip and threw it all back together. So far so good!

That is what I do on my Firebird flip up headlights!! Stupid plastic gear breaks teeth every couple years, flip it and get a couple more years.

I have the same problem, but, how do I locate the electric connection to unplug the motor and just leave the shade in the down position.
