Did every 89-95 SHO come with a y-pipe that has the direct drop into the cat on the rear portion of the y-pipe as shown in the one on the left of the picture?

SHOSource_y-Pipe_compare.jpg

because when I had my 92 up on a lift today I looked for the direct drop into the cat and I did not see it, the rear portion looked more like the one in the picture to the left.

so was the y-pipe design ever changed or was it always the direct drop and I have some sort of different y-pipe in there?

ALL MTX V6 SHOs came with the y-pipe that is on the left.

If you have an MTX, and it doesnt look like that one, then you have some sort of aftermarket unit.

Co signed with the above posts. The nasty 90 degree bend is a dead give away for a stocker.

anyone have any suggestions for where I should look to see if the y-pipe has any type of label on it saying what brand it is? it probably wont be up on a lift again anytime soon though.

There won't be a label anywhere on it. Can you imagine any kind of label that would be able to stand up to the heat, grime and rust that the y-pipe sees throughout its lifetime? Maybe a logo stamped into the metal or something, but no one ever does that AFAIK.

Does it matter what kind it is? If so, take some good pics and post them up here; someone will be able to tell you which one it is. To my knowledge there have only been a handful of manufacturers for these puppies, and while some have very distinguishing physical traits (primarily with how they deal with that rear downward angle), but I would imagine that most of them are very difficult to tell apart.

I guess I couldn't find the right words, I didn't mean like a sticker, I meant something stamped into the metal that would identify it.

and yes it does matter what kind it is to me, I would like to know what I have on my own car.

but yes, I guess pictures of it would be the best. although my car wont be back up on a lift till its drivable again, its halfway through an entire black interior swap/heater core replacement at the moment.

Right, it's just, like I said, they're pretty much all the same... A SHOshop y-pipe isn't going to perform any differently from a Performance Plus y-pipe, which isn't going to perform any differently from a Midwest SHO y-pipe, which isn't going to perform any differently from a Magnaflow y-pipe, which isn't going to perform any differently from a Catco y-pipe, which isn't going to... You get the point.

For all intents and purposes, they're all copies of each other, with the possible exception of the SHOSource model, which features equal-length pipes from each manifold to the Y, and thus has a different loop design in the rear bank bend.

I understand the compulsion to know exactly what you have (I have it too), but it may just be impossible to do in this case, depending on which one you have. You may not be able to narrow it down to 1 model by appearance.

That makes more sense. I will take a closer look and also some pictures while I am at it.

Disclaimer: I may be totally wrong about any of the "facts" above. Others will correct any mistakes I've made. Of course, I've done my best to provide accurate information, but the old memory banks have been known to slip up from time to time.

Your "facts" seem to completely ignore the possibility of a difference in pipe diameter, overall construction material, and simple build quality.

Just a FYI.

Many will argue that the performance plus y-pipe is much better than both of the other pipes you mentioned. Myself included.

If the stock pipe scores a "50" and the best aftermarket catted y-pipe scores a "100"

The crappiest AFTERMARKET y-pipe would score a "90".

So, while there may be some differences, all aftermarket y-pipes will perform a whole lot better than a stocker; almost negligibly.

Im just curious, In your opinion what y-pipe besides the stock one is the crappiest?
