Autozone claims I should get a Mobil M1-209 or something, not the M1-301. Should I go for the 209 or the Motorcraft one?

Note that this is a follow up to my previous boring oil question. The Mobil M1-301 was suggested as a very nice filter, but Autozone tells me it isn't for my SHO.

The M1-301 is an oversized version of the M1-209. Since they cost exactly the same you get a lot more filter for your money with the M1-301. Since you have an MTX there is plenty of space for it to fit. Don't worry, I also have an 89 and the M1-301 works great!

Yes it will, as will the fl-1A motorcraft. Just have to do some maneuvering around the radiator fan shroud assembly, but I have done it successfully.

I just did my first SHOil Change today and I went with Castrol GTX Hi-Mile and the FL-400s, I was gonna get an FL-1A, but that woulda been $2 more for another quart, so I went with the standard filter this time.

That extra qt of oil is useless. It is considered non usebale oil. That filter could hold ten qts but when the oil in the pan drops to the same amount for the normal filter its all over. Now if you could change the pans capacity then you making a gain.

I wouldn't call it useless. It increases the capacity by ~20%, which helps wrt cooling and heat absorption. When the temp is in the 90Fs you'll be glad you have it.

Plus there are more additives to deplete over an oil change interval and it can carry a greater load of dirt than the lesser amount of oil.

do you have an AZ near by? Why get it on line and pay the shipping. It is a cheap part, not worth ordering on-line. If you don't have an AZ, any other parts joint will have it for close to the same price. If the knucklehead at AZ want's to debate whether it will fit, tell him you got a 5 liter mustang. That is where ford actually call for it.

And get the motorcrap FL-1A. Less than half the price of the M-1 stuff. If you don't believe me, consult the bible, SDPATT translation. It is written, though shalt use none other than motorcrap.

If you want the biggest, cheapest filter spend $2.77 at walmart for the FL-1A.

If you want the best filter for your money and you can afford it spend the $10-$11 for the MI-301.

The only reason Scott recommends the motorcraft is because it is cheap. It is not the best filter out there.

I just changed my today. I didn't think the M1-301 was worth the extra money. I put in the Motorcraft FL-1A. That sucka's big! My oil filter wrench won't fit around one that big. Time for another tool!
The other thing I liked about the FL-1A is the filter gasket was nice and beefy unlike the thin gaskets found on most other filters.

The K & N filters have a nice 1" nut on the bottom. Although mine always come off with the filter wrench on the end of my arm.

As far as filter quality goes you get what you pay for.

I tried to but the 301 oil filter in my atx and it won't fit. I don't have enough room, the fan is in the way. I tried and tried but no luck. Got to go back to the 209. My car takes 6 qt with the 209.

FYI,
The Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters are built in the same factory, Champion Industries. They have the same media on the inside. The Mobil 1 as a slightly better burst strength on it's outside shell. Both are rated very good. I used K&N's until Auto Zone opened up here last year, now I use either one.
