So it seems every time I fix one thing on this car, another thing pops up

Lately I've been having this problem with my 2010 SHO, I'll get in the car push the brake and press the start button, ignition comes on, but it does not turn over. I'll repeat this process about 5-7 times before the car finally turns over and starts. At this point when it starts it sometimes says in the display "press brake to start". Then comes the other problem, now my transmission is locked in park, the little button on the side is locked and won't allow me to shift into reverse. I then repeat pressing and depressing the brake pedal several times until it releases. After that everything is fine, until I park again and it's locked.

Does anyone know what this could be? And is it possibly covered under drivetrain warranty? :(

Can you shift to N when you have the brake pedal depressed but without the engine started. Not sure if there is still a brake pedal switch on these cars, if there is, might be all thats needed. Could be the shifter also.

First thing to do is pull codes, see if there is any guidance from the car.

When I had my car disassembled I tried this and it doesn't work. In order to shift out of park the engine must be started or you have to used the mechanical shifter lock override. Just pushing on the brake with the engine off will not release it from park.

Check if the brake lights work.

The brake switch is 13480 in this horribly small picture (this is for my 2016, check fordparts.com for specifics about your model):

Brake lights come as as normal, but the car does not turn over until I've pressed and depressed the brake pedal about 5-10 times and keep pressing the start button. Then when it finally starts, it will not shift out of park unless I press and depress the brake pedal several times..

Seems very likely the switch is the culprit.
Is this something I can replace myself? Could you send me a link to the part I need? I know someone posted a link above, but it won't open for some reason :(

Oh and happy new year to all of you!

I think this is the part number for your SHO

Pretty straightforward. The key, on any vehicle is NOT touching the brake pedal assembly AT ALL during the installation process. Can't tell you how many people have had to install a new switch due to not paying attention to this step. But that's the only caveat ...

Good price on EBay

Same effective price on RockAuto

Thanks so much @SHOdded! I hope it's simple enough that a mechanically challenged person can figure it out :shame:

From the picture, it looks like it's under the dash, do I need to remove a bunch of stuff to get to it?

no ... look under the brake pedal you will see the switch. at the other end of the switch will be the connector. should be all there is to it.

when in doubt, get a friend to help you!

Not too dissimilar to this

I take back what I said about my brake lights working earlier. I got pulled over on my way to work, officer said my brake lights were not working. :nono:

I told him that I know, and that I have an appointment to get it fixed tomorrow, so he let me go with a warning. :hail:

Guess that pretty much makes it clear that it's the brake switch. How much do you think the dealer would charge for this? I'm due for an oil change as well.

Shouldn't take them but 5 minutes to do it. If you have a good relatioship with them, they should charge you for parts only.

Your right, should only take 5 min. Bet they charge an hour just because that's what their book says.
Called 2 dealers, I'm going in for an oil change anyways, so I asked how much it would be to replace the brake light switch. Both dealers said they'd have to diagnose it first, and that's 124.99 lol. The other dealer said the same thing, but that the repair would be free after paying said 125$.
Guess I'll just order the part and try to replace it myself...

Unless you have a) a good dealer, and b) a good relationship with the dealer, they are going to charge you up the ***** :( Can't totally blame them tho, it's their necks on the line also. Good luck with the DIY, it is very straightforward, just take your time, and follow the directions CLOSELY.

I took my car to the dealer once because I couldn't replace the part. They wanted somewhere around $125 to diagnose it and then money to fix it. I simply talked to them and they eventually agreed that they would replace the part I wanted, but wouldn't offer any warranty or guarantee on fixing the problem since they didn't diagnose it. Basically the only guarantee they would give is that the part they provided was a working part (which if it didn't fix my issue they would have to charge a diagnostic fee to prove the part was the issue and not something else). Basically, after some talking they agreed to do the fix but offer no warranty with it.

Got the brake light switch today. it's a pita to get out, and even worse to put in! But after some cursing and some persistence I got the new one in. Seems to have solved my problems, car fires right up and shifts into reverse every time! 20$ fix! :D
