Depends on what the dealer charges for the PTU. Off of eBay, you can buy from a dealer as low as $750-800 for the PTU. Add in the cost of new seals (not much), maybe some fluid to top off the trans (should not need but might) and 4.5 hours of labor. That is what your cost should be out the door. If you are paying out of pocket, you can ask to have the old unit back if you want, for dissection. Other than that it is just scrap metal ...

Got quoted 2300$ out the door with allignent included. Sounds a little high, but I don’t have any other dealers close to me.

can't have it towed to your independent shop from the dealer's?
I gave the dealer a call back, told them their price is way to high. Service manager called me back about an hour later, said 1780$ out the door is the lowest they can do.

hopefully you can trust this dealer to do the work right. be sure you are versed on the warranty etc. parts are 2 yrs/unlimited miles, not sure about the labor, maybe a year/12K?

Well, you're $520 cheaper than the initial quote.

So that's nothing to sneeze at.

I’m happy with that price for sure, I called my independed shop, they said right around 2k plus a 2 week wait for the parts.

Apr 11 2018 6329 - 2007-2016 Various Vehicles - All Wheel Drive (AWD) - Propane Or Natural Gas Odor During Idle Or Low Speed Driving - Built On Or Before 30-Jun-2016

Some 2007-2016 Edge/MKX/Flex/MKT/MKZ/MKS/Taurus/Police Interceptor Sedan/Explorer/Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with AWD and built on or before 30-Jun-2016 may exhibit a propane or natural gas odor during idle or low speed driving. This may be due to break down of the power transfer unit (PTU) fluid caused by excessive heat. If the source of the odor is identified as originating from the PTU, an idler bearing repair kit is available to repair the PTU.

I can attest what carnage is possible from the dreaded gas smell of death.

Im currently swapping out my PTU.
In my case I think the bearing went bad causing the fluid to deteriorate.
No prior smells/issues it was all of a sudden.

Dropping my car off Monday to have the tranny replaced under warranty and paying 900 out of pocket to have ptu replaced just for peace of mind. Hopefully everything works out.

Why drop $900 if you have a warranty? I would just have the PTU serviced and save the $.

I have no clue what the ptu looks like. I would assume after 100k miles it's probably never been serviced. I doubt the warranty company would pay for the ptu and the trans. For me the 900 dollars is cheap peace of mind.

Picked up my car yesterday, new PTU, full synthetic oil change, tire rotation and 4 wheel alignment. Total out the door $1782.82
Best of luck, you will want to change out fluid after a maximum of 5K miles, preferably 1K miles, assuming normal driving conditions. Cut in 1/2 for cityonly type conditions. This will remove all the breakin metals. No need to preset your PTU to xplod. Amsoil Severe Gear and Redline Lightweight Shockproof are very high quality fluids you should put on your short list.

I don't know how they can put in a new PTU for 900$ as the list price for just the part is 915$ or so, plus labor. But if they will, I'd jump all over that!
