Back at it...

Well its been awhile since Ive messed around with this SHO. Ran out of money and the winter hit, i have to work outside so that kinda slows things down...
Installed a brand new DPFE and it still has the same problem.
There is no way I could have installed the cats backwards, they are direct fit and they only bolt on the one way. Both cats are heating up.
I found that the evap purge solenoid is bad, along with the lines that hook to it. Could that cause the glowing cats?
I took my coil pack to autozone and had it tested along with a used one I got, they both tested good. Ive got the maf, tps, and throttle body to swap out. (my idle screw was broken) Waiting on some money to get more parts before putting it all back together. Need to test my fuel injectors yet, and get a new set of plug wires(what kind should I get?, I hear that a lot of them dont fit properly.), throttle body gaskets, and the evap solenoid....
I really want to get this car going, really dont want to give up on it and take it to the scrap yard. =( any ideas or things I should check out then please feel free to reply.

Turns out I had the firing order wrong. Put the wires in the correct order and it started right up! However, I had a rough idle and the car would stall after I pressed the gas and let up, stalled after rpms dropped.

I had this problem when just two plugs wires were mixed up, the result was unburnt fuel being dumped into the exhaust stream and causing a cat to glow cherry red hot.

Please do yourself a favor and double check (or triple check) against this:
(there are many resources that have this wrong, perhaps you had the wires wrong, and "fixed" them with the wrong diagram, just check it again to be sure!)

I would swap the old Y-pipe and old cats back onto the car while you are ironing out this problem.
People might jump on me for this, but I would install Motorcraft O2 sensors in your system. They are the only sensors that allow a pass on an emission test on my car.

OK, Who's gonna make up a couple hundred 3" x 4" stickers for everyone to put under the hood with this info? I'd buy a couple for $8
I vote check the wires first.
As silly as this may seem, have you seen how much pressure you're getting at the tailpipe? I've seen the cat guts get trapped at the rear Y split and mufflers, and clog things up.
Guiness is yummy.

update

well guys turns out the mufflers were both plugged with chunks of the old cats.....that stopped the issue with the cats glowing red hot. i have been over the wires at least 3 times. now to figure out the issue with it dumping fuel excessively. replaced the throttle body, maf sensor, tps, iac and it still seems to be getting too much fuel. now getting codes for cylinders 2 and 5. got a brand new coil pack and still has the same issue. 2 and 5 are not getting any spark at the coil. going to check the dis and camshaft sensor next. ive got a used DIS that i got from a member here so hopefully that will do the trick. just need to get some thermal paste. any ideas or input of course is appreciated. i'll keep everyone updated.

Thermal paste can be had from Radio Shack.
FWIW I had a failed front o2 sensor that made the 95 mtx run like poo and the cat ran red hot. To make a short story long.... I melted the cat down and trashed the 3.0 when it sucked ceramic particles back into the motor during the 12 mile limp home from work. 2 years later (the long part of the story...) I now have a 3.2 in front of the 5 speed as well as some really free flowing cats.
Moral here: Don't ignore those red cats, fix the problem or prepare for a motor swap!

Belmont, you're not too far from the rest of us here on the island. I'm in Queens, Fonz is in Brooklyn, and the rest are out east a bit in Suffolk.

My car is laid up for the winter (a bit earlier than I would have liked, but w/e), but we get together pretty frequently. Keep you in mind the next time we all get together.

Congrats on getting the car running proper! :thumb:

BEAUTIFUL!!!

Im having the EXACT same problem with my dads SHO right now.

We swapped the intake with another intake and replaced the plugs and wires (w/ motocraft plugs and tylor wires).
when we started it up, it stared than died. Same thing over and over. Until it wamred up than it was able to idel on it own, but sounds wrong.
We only got 1 Glowing Red Cat though (rear bank). And the car only has 1 muffler on now, 2.5 maganflow straight through muffler, So I dont think any oof teh cats got in their.
And also, I too JUST got a new SS y-pipe put on with new Dynomax cats and bosch O2 sensors (maybe 400 miles on the y-pipe before this happened).
We just replaced teh cat I(serious waste of $$) and still the same problem.

I do remember the DIS having basicaly NO thermal paste on it when i installed it.
I had someone use a fogger device to check for vacuum leaks, he says he saw nothing.
I belive the check engine light is on and has been on forever I think. Maybe we should check it out? But ScottHurd, did fixing what the check engine light said was wrong, fix your problem??
It seems like you just took peoplel advice on things to change and eventually got it running again. You didnt fix something the CE light said was wrong and than have the problem be fixed, or did you??

This post (topic) has givin me hope to get this running again. I was (and kinda still am) thinking about giving up on the car and moving on to something with more elbow room in the engine bay. its a REAL PITA working on the smallest things on this car, that should be simple.

Ill be comeing back here in 2 days to update with what Ive done to the car. The car is 60 miles from my house at the garge we got the cat replaced just to find out that wasnt the problem. So with it being so dfar away, working on it will be when ever I can get their.

I would like to replace the DIS as soon as possible also. But dont think Ill find a gen1-2 SHO in my areas JY. So what other cars can I find this DIS for that will work for the SHO. Is their on a Reg Taurus that I can use??
I read on ebay that the TBrid SC will work also, but their gonna be just as hard to find as a gen1-2 SHO. So Im hoping their are other Fords that have the DIS that are easier to find in a local JY.
The car also has the wire for the oil level broke off. it dangles their, but no light or any problems that can notice has arised after it happned. Noticed it when the oil was being changed. took the sneor out cause of a small leak, teflon taped the threads and put it back on than the wire just broke off. But the car ran fine afterwards.

Thanx for any help or info with this :salute:

Dylan, it's been a while. Glad to hear from you again.

The only two Ford's that used the DIS are the SHO and the TBird SC, unfortunately.

They pop up on eBay now and again, but if you're really hard up for one, I think I have a spare that works.

It's not a Motorcraft (Wells possibly?), and it's painted candy red. If you can live with that, I'll get it in the mail to you. Let me know.

I think it's somewhere in the middle of New York State.

:theyareontome:

If you guys tell me where is the middle of New York State, I would know too. I swear, it is so funny sometimes to read about something that you had no idea about things that existed.

Is it such a secret to write where is one from?
"Please help! But please don't come too close to me, I'm scared."
I was about to offer to come bring my parts to help him test the car. That's good that now I know where it is.

To many people, yes. If someone wants to keep parts of their personal life private, they have every right to.

I list Queens as my city, but everyone knows damn well that Queens is massive. If someone wants to stalk all over Queens to find me they're more than welcome. Here's to hoping that they start in Queensbridge or Maspeth first.
