I must be the only HP tuner owner around here LOL. HP OBD2 device can live log without a computer, stores to the device and then plugged into a laptop/computer to be read by the VCM Scanner/ VCM Editor. I originally picked HP - since my car has straight DP's and Gearhead and all others report on their sites they wont tune off-road and gave into buying HP.
@SHOthyme is correct, it CAN be done without the laptop using the SCT livewire, but it is usually preferred as you can see what is going on in real-time a lot clearer. After a run, I can quickly identify points of concern and even do some on-the-spot troubleshooting and maybe make changes to driving style as needed.
As for SCT vs HPT, HPT is quite a bit more user friendly and the GUI is more intuitive for sure. I also heard (but can't confirm), that it datalogs a bit faster with higher resolution. Matt at Gearhead likes to have his customers datalog with HPT if possible and then he writes the tunes for the SCT (for those customers that have both HPT and SCT). As for what either tuner can do for the platform, the HPT doesn't offer any additional capabilities over SCT. The GUI may look different and be easier to navigate, but the fundamental tuning ability of each brand is the same. They both have access to the same tables for this particular platform (not the case with others).
I've had this conversation with Brad at AJP about HPT vs SCT and he's stated that there is nothing the HPT can do that the SCT can't...tuning-wise. He stated there's really no need for him to invest in the tuning license (which can be expensive for tuning shops) if it doesn't add any real value. This seems to be the reason why many ecoboost tuners still use SCT, despite HPT being more user-friendly. The juice isn't worth the squeeze for them. So I decided to stay with an SCT device as it is the widest supported platform, giving it the most potential options and flexibility.
