Alright I've done a search but haven't exactly came up with the answer I need. I bought a 1992 SHO for 200 bucks and am trying to get it running. It's out of time and immedietly dies and backfires after starting. I thought maybe a timing belt so I bought everything for the front 60K. After pulling the front dress off the belt is still in time, so my question is, could the cam sensor or the crank position sensor cause this? Pleeeeeeeeease tell me that it is these sensors. Thanks!

Have you pulled codes? If the car is starting, I would say its most likly not the camshaft or the crank sensor. Does the car try to idle? Have you tried giving it some gas when starting/started?

its will hit on a few cylinders and die, it will make a half-arsed attempt at running but it won't stay running. i haven't pulled codes yet and it won't stay running long enough to give it gas.

sure..those sensors are common to go and create all kinds of problems..so will it stay running if you hold the gas down?

not really, it will run for a bit (one second or so), then die even with gas

whats this stuff iv herd of a improperly gapped cps? Maybe the cps is out of gap and is starting to go bad so its making a half ass atempt to run. Also is there a possibility your plug wires are not on in the right order. The Chilton's manuel does have the wrong firing order.

i do'nt have a chilton's, does any one have a diagram? it doesn't look like the wires have been messed with. if it helps any, it sat for a year or so before I bought it. I've tried new gas (siphoned the old) and fuel filter. so if that helps any.

also my 94 atx was kinda having the same problem . it would start but idle like crap and then stall, do the wiggle test on the wire harness by the coil pack thats where my problem seem to be

use a paperclip and pull your codes... its so easy to do, costs nothing. then you could have a much better idea of what i going wrong.

Charge the battery up and try to start her again. Then pull the codes.

update! After getting everything back together it runs, no missing and you have to give it gas to keep it running. This is after getting the front 60k done. Also, the stock airbox is missing so the one sensor isn't doing it's function so I thought that may be it. I'm not sure though, if you have any suggestions let me know. Oh and I must be doing something wrong because I can't get it to flash the codes.

As long as the MAF is hooked up, there should be no issue there. The other sensor is just IAT(intake air temp), and mine is just sitting near my cone filter.

If I were you, I'd try and keep it running long enough to get it warmed up, and run it for a good 20 minutes or more. The cylinders could be fuel soaked...The computer may still need to relearn... Check the TB and IAC for cleanliness.
