Ok, changing my oil... I notice that there is a part RIGHT UNDER where the filter screws in??? And when you take off the filter, oil just pours on this (part). The part is covered in sludge so I will need to clean it off..

Can I just spray it with degreaser and wipe???
What is the part???
What kind of design is that???

P.S. I've started to fold a cardboard slab so oil runs out w/out messin anything up...

AND I USE CASTROL GTX as recommended by the pros!!

That part is the starter. People say you shouldn't do this but I've let the oil run all over it since I've owned the car (7yrs) with no ill effect.

I've done it to. Don't worry about it, just spray it off with some degreaser or carb cleaner. The important thing is that you use the proper GTX 10-30. If you use quaker state it will cause the starter to fail. wink

Someone suggested to me once to use a 2 liter pop container with the big end cut off.

I use a cut up gallon milk jug to catch my filter oil. Talk about spilled 'milk'

As far as starter damage, I'm crossing my fingers but nothing's happened to mine in 13 years. Maybe the extra oil helps keep things well lubed? ha!

The center of a gallon, or gallon and a half bleach bottle is a good size to loop over the starter. Cut it so about 1/2" of the raised sections remain top and bottom, guides most of the oil around the sub frame and starter. By the way, the battery lead on the starter is hot. The 89s,,and maybe 90, that have solenoid on the fender do not have hot wires on the starter. I guess we were not good enough for the little funnel that ford put on many other engines.

Of couse you could get a V8 where the filter is out in the open and straight up and down. :D

My original starter lasted about 85k. It was replaced last year, about april. I just had to replace my starter again. The mechanic said the most likely reason it failed was because of all the oil and gunk that was covering it. I don't know.

It does seem like a ridiculus spot, and I have been spilling oil on mine since I got the car, and my starter still works
