I have a 1993 automatic SHO with 70k miles.
The oil pressure sending unit started leaking an was replaced 1 year ago. In Feb, after driving on the highway and pulling off the exit ramp, the red oil warning lite started to flicker. The Ford dealer found that the wire to the sending unit was bare and grounding to the engine and replaced the pigtail. The problem was resolved for 2 months but reappeared this week. The same dealer looked into the problem and checked the oil pressure and found it to be 8 psi when engine was warm and at idle. Note, if you put the transmission in neutral the rpms go up slightly and the lite goes out.
The dealer is now recommending an engine short block replacement due to "wear". It sounds to me more like the oil pump not performing versus wear on the engine. Has anyone else had similar experiences or do you have any recommendations?
Thanks, Brad
