Ok, so since I'm always trying to get the best for my 89 SHO, I have a question....

I've been researching oil filters. While I'm stuck on K&N filters of their great performance and construction, I wanted to know what people think about the Mobil1 301 oil filter. I figure that I need a backup filter just in case the K&N isnt available. Also, from what Ive read, the Mobil1 filters down to 10 micron. I wouldnt mind using the Mobil1 301 for the second auto rx rinse cycle because of its filtering ability. In either case, I just need to have a filter that I can get when the K&N is not available. Thoughs? comment? all will be greatly appriciated. Thanks

IMHO, save the cash and purchase the Motorcraft filter FL-400S. I think a good majority on this forum have used that filter without any long term or performance problems. The Motorcraft filter has served my 89 SHO well since 1989........

In terms of the price, I could care less. I have used the motocraft filter and do like it and would use it in a pinch, but wouldnt mind having a secondary large filter to substitute the K&N with.

There was a pretty engaging "conversation" about this very subject not a year ago. As I remember, the website that provided the most info was
www.bobistheoilguy.com (?) I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong :bonk:

With rare K&N exception, I've been using the Mobil M1-209 myself as this is what the original owner of the car used.

Sentimental fool I guess ;)

I usually use the FL1-A...as it is bigger than the FL400-S. That said I think the motocraft filters are more than adequate.

FL1-A here for the MTX. FL400s for the ATX. :corn:

Just relocate the oil filter and the FL-1A won't be a ***** again

I use Wix (or Napa Gold) myself, but.. Any ol' filter besides a Fram or it's clones will do nicely.

I'm not 100% sure, but check that Bobistheoilguy site because I seem to remember reading there that K&N and M1 filters were made by the same company on the same line and were essentially the same filter.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi is the place. Yes Champion Labs makes the Mobil One and K&N filters. They also make the Wal-Mart SuperTech. But they are all of different quality. The Mobil One will filter down to 10 microns where as the K&N is a 15-20 micron filter. One thing to be aware of is flow and the finer the filter the less the flow.

20 microns is less than the bearing clearance so is considered a good filtering benchmark. Seeing as the SHO motors have low pressure high flow oil systems a fine filter may not be the best choice.

FWIW you will be hard pressed to find a better filter than the Motorcraft, especially at $3.00 apiece.

You are correct, Mr. A. Curiously, the K&N is a couple bucks more (than the Mobil1) too.

Great website SHOZ123 :thumb:

I happen to know that they are built by champion labs(I am a member of the bobistheoilguy forum). They are all, however, built slightly different. I just wanted to know if I could substitute one for the other. I would expect the Mobil1 301 to be better for the rinse phase of the auto rx treatment because of it lower micron filtering rating. I love the K&N flow numbers, but would prefer something that would filter better for the rinse.

I'm curious, what is the difference is between the 209 that I'm using and the 301 that you're talking about?

Maybe I should be looking at the 301 instead?

Oh. Same diameter, just longer? Sounds good, more surface area. How much longer approximately?

Crap. I just did an oil change Tuesday morning too... :bonk:

the 301 is oversized. They pretty much the same except for the size.

With more filter area, seems like the Mobil 1 301 should have better flow numbers than the smaller 209 Mobil 1. Was that checked in the flow test?
