same here
i also wouldn't use a tool on these filters, they usually don't need one
hand tight with a rag to keep it dry should be good
a strap wrench is occasionally needed to take it off, but never tighten it with a tool (i saw this a lot when i worked at a dealership - the tool just makes it worse to get off later and it doesn't seal any better)
i'd definitely get a new filter, you don't know if somehow something in the inside broke and is loose in there - i've seen crazier things happen
don't use additives either - i've found them to cause more harm than good - my dad added some stuff to the LeBaron that is currently being rebuilt

and i never trust the stick - mine is JUST above the line after the 5 quart add and i add half a quart when it hits the line and i've had absolutely no problems

The stick can lie. What is "good" at warm idle is "fill" at cold/off. The filter should be ok, but you STILL NEED TO CHANGE IT ASAP! If something broke off inside the filter... :oogle:

The only thing I would ever put in my oil would be Auto-RX, and only if it's already fxxxing up (blowing smoke, etc). Ever seen Wheel of Fortune? You know the "Before & After" category? Figure out "Snake Oil Additive" for me :naughty:. Yup, same thing!

Also; you're not OCD. You're psycho. If you were OCD, you'd type better! :laugh_ti:

I would NEVER use a tool to put an oil filter on. It's completely unnecessary and requires excessive effort to remove it after 3k miles...

why do you have to drain the oil again? That oil is fine, just take the filter off put the new one on (making sure to put some oil in the filter before you put it on) and just add more oil as needed. It should only need another qt. But definitely replace the filter. When you start the car just check oil pressure. The thinner oil may drop oil pressure slightly, but it will cool the engine better, be better for the engine on startup and flow better at higher rpm. just make sure the oil pressure goes up about 10psi per every 1k rpm. Im not sure if the sho does that stock but thats what the ideal oil should do in any car.

Just reiterating what has already been said...filter tools are primarily for taking them OFF. The 5w30 that was first suggested for our engines was when they were still new and all seals and gaskets and surfaces were "baby bottom" fresh...I'd go heavier now. I even run 10w40 in my 190K 89 SHO in the summer here in Atlanta! As for the filter, I'd say since the oil isn't heavy enough...just start over from scratch...new filter, oil and all.
