I would suggest that you switch trans fluid to Amsoil ASAP to get the most out of the transmission, tuned or not. Other than that, ruminate on the 2013+ trans/oil cooler upgrades

I was actually just thinking about that... by the end of my commute, my TFT is 190-200 degrees. <--that's sweat, not tears lol. Anyhow, I remembered you said you don't break 130 or so with the 2013 cooler, iirc... so I think that'll be my next mod, even before downpipes.

Why Amsoil over the Motorcraft Mercon LV I now have sitting on a shelf ready for installation this weekend? If its that much better, I'll toss (give away) the Motorcraft stuff and get it... or use it to flush first ... is there anywhere cheaper than www.amsoil.com? They want nearly $50 per gallon.

Motorcraft fluid is good, no question, but it gets used up rather quickly if you drive your car like a performance vehicle. That goes for engine oil, trans fluid, etc. Hence the move up to Amsoil. Hard to say exactly WHAT makes the product better (won't find much useful technical data), but the results (of testing, and from end users) are there. I'd find a BG center and have a professional trans flush done using the Amsoil fluid. That would really give you a fresh start. After that, the drain & fill (if necessary) would keep the fluid all Amsoil. You can do the flush yourself, but I'd spring for the BG service. Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid is what you want. If you get engine oil, you want the Signature Series there as well.

You buy directly from Amsoil, that's their model. Some dealers DO stock the product locally, although you can save on shipping if you pick up from an Amsoil warehouse. I know there's one in PA, but not sure how far from you.

OK, so I found a shop that does the BG service, guy said they will only put the BG ATF in if they do the service. Ugh. OK, so I called my dealership, just to get pricing (the BG service place charged $220) and the service manager said they charge $170. I asked him if I brought in Amsoil how much it would be, just for the service. He then went into this thing where they use Valvoline for ATF, not Motorcraft, and he claims it's the "highest quality in the industry"... and that it comes with a 30,000 mile warranty on the transmission up to $3,000... that I'd not get any kind of warranty with Amsoil (unless they have their own?)

So, I don't know... I don't care that much about the price for something that's supposed to last 30,000 miles, so price is less the issue. It's more like if the Valvoline stuff is really that good, even for racing, then it's definitely more convenient, just roll in on Saturday and get that done.

Thoughts, opinions?

Well, if you have to compromise (and you'd be doing that with Valvoline compared to Amsoil), get the BG service done at the shop (not dealer). See how it works out for you. Should be good for at least the 30,000 miles the dealer is warrantying you for. Which P/N (312, or 314) do they use?

Also, on my way home, I stopped at a garage owned by a guy that I used to have service done before he opened his own shop... a long, long time ago. I've stopped in to say hi now and again... he (and his son) race in addition to having a shop. They used to drag, but now they road race, so they have a good appreciation for demanding applications.

Anyhow, I asked him about all this... he was pretty staunchly recommending Royal Purple ATF for my car, and his son also immediately knew what the issue was with the high RPM hang. I was only halfway through describing the issue, and he completed my sentence with "and it hangs at the top for a little too long before it drops and shifts?" YEAH!! Exactly!! "That's called Rev Hang, I used to have XYZ car that did it, it's a software issue, and can be resolved by the tuner." ...so let's hope that the new tune minimizes it. Either way, it still doesn't sound "wrong" based on all the input, just not ideal from a "user" point of view. Basically, no one at this point is suggesting that my Transmission is in trouble at all.

I'm still gonna get the flush done. I crossed 42k this week. So, yeah.

To be honest...I only do drain & fills, thus I don't get all the fluid out each time. I'm against mixing the trans fluids, so I'm still running the OEM stuff. I change it every 15k to make sure it's in top shape, but I go to the dragway quite often.

I'd highly suggest running the Amsoil signature series 5w/30 motor oil & using the Amsoil Severe Gear for the PTU. The Amsoil has cut down on engine noise a TON compared to the Mobil 1 full syn I was running.

Does the BG service include a new transmission fluid filter? I know they are considered "non-serviceable" but if they have to take it apart to clean, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Nope, no new filter on these transmissions. BUT they should be doing the quick clean as part of the flush which cleans valve body, filter/screen, etc. Def verify that.

So what do you guys think of the shop's claim that Royal Purple ATF > Amsoil ATF?? I can't find any data on those... but they swear by Royal Purple and hung their head in shame when I mentioned Amsoil. lol. Apparently, one of the guys there tried Amsoil and his tranny blew within a week after having been fine prior to the change... so they've become a bit Amsoil shy? I guess. I don't know. Even if Royal Purple is 9x better than Motorcraft ATF and Amsoil is 10x better (or whatever) as long as it's much better than what I was GOING to put in, I can live with that. Any input on that?

Seeing as I sell Amsoil, not a whole lot of it either....I try to not push it on anyone real bad as it starts to sound like a sales pitch rather than a quest for keeping your components in top shape for longevity!

If you haven't tried it yet...1 oil change with the signature series usually opens people's eyes to the benefits, the noticeable difference in engine clatter is phenomenal.

OK, for the record, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that we NEVER use Royal Purple's ATF. I could only find two types of ATF on their site. The Racing ATF (not appropriate for stock trannies) and the Max ATF. While the latter is good for Ford Mercon and Mercon V, their own site says very specifically that it's NOT recommended for Mercon LV applications!!! Good thing I didn't go through with it, whew!! Just thought you all should know.
