No Power -Cam timing?

I just purchased a '90 SHO with 64K miles. It's a very nice car but it has NO power at all. So far, this is what Iv'e checked.

-Fuel pressure, pump and regulator

-Plugs, wires and ignition

-Compression

-No codes

-No misfires

The previous owner told me he had just had the water pump replaced. Does the timing belt come off for this?(I don't know a lot about the V6) If so, I think the cam timing may be off. The engine only has a little bit of power from about 4-5K. After 5K it it has no power or gain and can barely make it to 6, let alone 7. Any ideas or info on cam timing?

Un plug the SPOUT connector and check the timing. I have a light and some gen 3 parts if you need it.

Hmmm..I thought the spout connector was for ignition timing.

The timing belt is typically removed to replace the WP. I'd guess that you're on the right track in suspecting it.

Next step is to pull the upper timing belt cover and check to see if cam timing is synchronized with the crank.

Set the crank to 0 DTDC. The cams should be dead on either 6 or 12 o'clock. If on 6 o'clock, give the crank another revolution to bring the cams to 12 and check for proper alignment.

Also, check the timing belt tension. If it's loose, it will greatly thow off cam timing and the car will be a dog.

Check and make certain the SPOUT plug is actually plugged in. When removed, it makes the car also run like a pooch by defaulting timing to 10 DBTDC (removes advance and uses a base dwell). It won't affect cam timing, though.

If you haven't found anything in these checks, I'd go next to checking for an exhaust restriction. An engine with a restricted exhaust will run like a three-legged pooch.

Cool thanks! I'm not sure but is the spout the little plugged connector near the DDL and STI? I read the instuction on the catalyst label "above the PS pump" but not sure if that's the one.

Also, can you adjust timing belt tension? Is doing a timing belt a Pain and should the CKP be done at this time as well?
