I just picked up a 1999 SHO, that's the Gen III right?? What are some decent bang for the buck bolt-ons?? Filters, exhuast, computer chip??

I'm new to SHO's, but very familar with Mustangs.

Also, what are average stock 1/4 mile times for a 99 SHO?? And trap speed, thanks.

The first simple and major gain mod is to toss out the current sax air intake path and put on some form of direct cold air from the inner wheel well, such as the Porter version that you can find detailed on V8SHO.COM.

Most Gen IIIs stock run about 15.5 at about 95 mph, roughly.

Diablo is working on a chip that has good word of mouth on the prototypes, but is not yet gnerally available, to my knowledge. All of the other chips currently available have, at best, a mixed history of success, and some seem to be almost certain to cause damage.

The exhaust is very highly tuned already, and it appears that any gains made in alterations there tend to be in the area of more high end at the cost of low end. However, many people change the mufflers to get an alteration in sound, without any serious change in backpressure and power production.

A K&N panel filter never hurts.

Welcome, 96gts.

First thing you want to try to do is meet up with the Lone star SHO club for the fall run and G2G.

This is taking place Nov 2nd in Kerrville and will last most of the day.

There you will have a chance to converse with about 4 or 5 different GenIII owners about the car you just purchased and how to take care of them.

Visit v8sho.com for all the info you could want about your car as well. If you can't make the fall run, there is a section on the v8sho.com site that has a members list, there you can e mail other GenIII members in your area, if there are any.

Again, welcome.

Welcome!

stephen is close...but its actually around 15.5 @ 88-89mph.

A good stock SHO will hit about 15.2-15.3 @ over 90.

With a 99...you've got a good chance. They seem to be on the quicker side.

Exhaust. Rip out those mufflers and put a set of aftermarket ones on.

Chips. Stay away from them...far away. Theres at least one in testing...but until its proven. Don't bother. Too many problems.

Air intake. Check www.v8sho.com for info.

Opps. Sorry, I had forgotten. Shows how much interest I have had in trap times since the one time I did it when I first got the car. Or maybe it was just a senior moment.... :)

Mark is doubtless right about everything except the '99 part, since everyone knows the '98s are cooler, faster, more beautiful. and wittier. wink

I'd say the average time is more like 15.7-15.9 with traps around 86-88 mph. That's the best I've done without removing any weight.

Cold air and removing the passenger seats has been the best mod for my car. The K&N panel filter was worth about 2 hp at best and the SHO Shop UDPs didn't fit.

Okay, so far, after doing some searching, I've figured out what I will do, and in what order.

-Some type of free flowing filter.
-Bypass 3rd cat, but will this hinder low-end a lot?? Also, will this make the exhaust note louder? If so, I might not do mufflers.
-And probably exhaust, but I don't know what will sound good on this little V8. Any preferences here??

I'd like to learn more about the guy here that has a charger, is it a kit you bought or did you have to make it, like the tubing and brakets??

By the way, I don't want to hear anything about the tranny's going south. Are they problematic??

Those are some pretty damn fine times posted for your Mustang in your sig, specially the 60' times. Sounds like a nice ride!

Yeah, the charger is almost ready for public consumption, and the trannies, well they suck. I have neither problem (or experience, I should say) so other's will probably answer for you. Right Kirk?

Thanks, but that 60' time or the ET in my stang didn't come over night. It took much practice to get a car that is supposed to run mid 14's with what I've done to it, not high 13's. I have about 300 passes at the track in the Stang, and I hope to make some soon in the SHO. :)

BTW, it also looks like the front brakes already need changing. There's about 3/16th of a pad left, and they shake braking from 70 and down.

In my experience taking out the 3rd cat will make it a touch louder...and you may lose a very small bit of low end torque...but you should gain high end torque. Depends on your driving style.

If you love to red line her alot...take it out. If not...leave it in.

My best time at the track is 15.18 @ 91.80. This is on the faster end for V8SHO's. I've been running a SHOShop Intake (K-N Cone) but recently moved back to the stock airbox and a panel filter. Haven't gotten her to the track yet on this setup.

As far as mufflers. Just depends on your preference.
