Whats up guys,

My 95 SHO is giving me some problems, #1 when I'm driving the car in 4th or 5th gear the just shuts off and dies. Its like the fuel is cutoff, also I have noticed it take 2-3 trys to start so this is leading me to believe I need to start at the fuel pump and filters and go from there. (Novice time/question)....Is the fuel pump located near or on the fuel tank or is it mounted elsewhere and if need be can it be changed by me with help. Then the car can sit for anywhere from 5-20 minute and then it starts right up like nothin ever happened. This happens at 30 MPH or 70MPH and I just printed the test procedures so thats in my plans for tonight. Can I do the testing by myself or do I need a helper. #2 I noticed while my SHO is having difficulties on the throttle body where the cable from the gas pedal it is a 4 wire braided cable it is holding on my 2 strands....Help!!! Can I buy a new cable and do the replacement myself with basic tools and no garage and 100 degree temps. Is it a tough fix does the car need to be elevated. Thanks and any and all suggestions are greatly appreiciated.

The fuel pump is mounted inside the gas tank...some people drop the gas tank to replace while others cut a 'secret' door under the rear seat to gain access to the pump.
The car dying the way your talking sounds like your CPS (think thats right) or something. Does your waterpump leak? When you try re-starting it right after it just up and dies, does your tach read anything while its cranking? It could be the fuel pump, but a sensor on the engine seems to be the culprit as this seems to happen more often than not.

Changing the fuel pump I dont think is all that hard...depending on how you do it, either way seems pretty straight forward with basic tools.

The cable...dunno.

Others will chime in with more knowledge than I... :thumb:

If it just dies w/o warning, I'd suspect the CPS as well. Chech your tach. If it's dead while the car is running, thats a sure sign of a bad cps. It's a PITA to change as it's below/behind the water pump. Most people change this part in a 60K just as "while you are there", and don't want to do that labor twice.

If it were the fuel, it would probably stumble before it dies, as the motor would try to ignite the remaining gas fumes. (?)

When you say it takes 3-4 tries to start, is that initially, or after it craps out?

More on the CPS

91 SHOplus when I first start the car after it has been sitting for a few hours say when I'm at work, over night. When it dies after driving it and I sit for 10-20 minutes it starts on the first try and very easy. Any recommendations on where the best place to purchase a new CPS...and cost, I know I'm asking for alot of info but I enjoy my SHO alot and I don't want to take it in the shorts too bad from some mechanic or service person trying to make a fast buck on my lack of knowledge or terminology for my own car and parts.

Phatsho, my plus does the same thing at startup. I forget what it's proper name is, but there is a fuel pressure regulator that keeps the system pressurized. When it goes bad it takes long crank times to start the car.

Try turning the key to on, but don't start it. Count to 5, then start it. You may even hear the fuel pump whining.

As for the cps, I ordered mine through www.rockauto.com. Contact the AZ sho club. They've got some really knowledgeable members, and can be of more help re: the install, as they're in your neighborhood.

I would say CPS. My car did this recently and then finally would not start at all no matter how long it sat. I suspected the CPS but since I got no codes from computer i wondered. ALso my tach jumped up to 300-400 when I was trying to crank the car. I did the lower 60K on my car and the CPS was the problem even though the tach was not dead a restart. The tach do not always indicate a bad CPS.

Also if you suspect fuel pump check your pressure at the fuel rail with a gauge. It could be weak and shutting down but chances are it is the CPS.

How many miles on the car and when was the last 60K performed?
