My shifter feels really tight

Anyone had this problem? I really need to loosen it up. 3rd gear is a mo fo when racing. I used to drive a firebird 6 speed and it was never this tight.

its a rod shifter BTW

I would think that if it is only hard to get into one gear, the the problem may not be in the shifter, but in the transmission.

My 91 MTX usually gets tight when it needs a oil drain.
sometimes it is tight at times and I carefully try another gear
till it gets moving, every time it gets tight is when Im not in motion
once moving the shifter frees up on me.
but that is not all the time , lately it works great.
when was the last oil drain on you MTX?

Its not like its hard to get in gear, its just hard to move it around. Even just side to side in nuetral its kinda tight. It feels like someone might have overtightened somthing.

Thats how my new shifter feels on my '93. Before getting the new one it was really loose but now it feels a whole lot better.

You might want to get up under the car and see if there's anything that should be bolted up that's not and that nothing is binding when shifting. (requires a second person to do the shifting while you watch) Also check where it connects to the trans.

Try warming the car up and then turn it off. Shift through all the gears with the car off and not using the clutch. What happens then? Is it still as tight? Just 3rd gear?
