UPdate... Engine is going out for machining and i get my pistons tomorow night. Looked into rotating assembly balancing and its gonna be about 550... i have no more money to spend of things like this if i want this engine to be in my car any time soon lol. ground all my valves and found out one is slightly bent so i need to get one replacment. guides are all tight as heck and im doing my seats tomorow morning. all my springs are within factory spec. gasket kit should be in by the end of spring break and reassembly will begin shortly afterwards. thats all for now folks!

For one: $550 for balancing is WAY out of line.

and if you don't balance it (SHO engines are internally balanced) you won't be able to keep rod bearings in it. There is a big difference between stock piston weights and aftermarket ones.

I believe there are 1 or 2 FI guys that havn't had it balenced if I'm correct.

When I said I was going to drop in forged pistons without balencing, people flipped out.

Oh, and welded diffs are good, for your entertainment:

Who are these people who haven't had them balanced?

Putting in completely DIFFERENT pistons without balancing is requesting something bad to happen. You may want to research engine harmonics and how much of a beating an unbalanced engine takes especially the faster you spin... Can you say "exponential"?

yeah i called around and found a place to do it for $350 still pricey but labour is lots up here.

As for the pistons has anyone else had like machining burrs by the valve reliefs? they stick out past the skirt and it spissing me off... nothing a file cant fix but fark... for 1200 bucks they should be perfect.

Update, Dropping off rotating assembly and block to be balanced and the block to be decked at a local machinist, balancing is 348 decking is 145 and flywheel resurfacing is 65 so thats all gonna get done in the next week or so. tomorrow morning if the pilot arrives i will be grinding the seats in the heads and should be busy with some other misc stuff. ill post up some pics soon. im extreamly busy and i have to go to the hospital 3 times a day for IV therapy antibiotics so life is a bit chaotic right now. anyways will post up details later.

If all possible, don't have material taken off of the block nor heads (or at least a very minimum). A couple of thousandths is o.k. to make sure the mating service is smooth/level, but any more than that I wouldn’t recommend. It throws off the cam timing ... the more taken off, the worse.

also if you plan to boost it, dont let them touch the crank. the only time ive ever heard of a sho's crank breaking is because they knife edged it and lightened it. this is a no-no because it is surface hardened.

i dont think so. anyways im just getting the block decked not the heads. and he said usual required is about 5-7 thou. it takes what it takes so w/e. The guy that did the boring said that the deck around the coolant jackets was eaten up a bit but tis not bad at all so i think a few thou should do just fine. anyways, im off to do an engine swap on a little honda. peace.

I still want to know who had their crank knife-edged. I've heard of one guy on cardomain, but I don't think he ever finished the car. He also doing something like 7:1 compression too.

Did one head today for grinding, took a while to get in the groove today and we had to do some stupid theory in teh classroom first. got all my 45's on one head done, they barley needed to be touched. leaving for victoria tonight so ill be back to work on this puppy on monday and i plan on getting all the grinding done and get both heads assembled on monday. rotating assemble and block should be back mid next week so it works out pretty good.
