I guy I know at work said he had topped off his new Toyota with the regular green anti-freeze a month of so back. Now his mechanic says his cooling system is filled with slime because it was using the new orange stuff and you CAN'T mix them. The way this guy tells the story, his engine is DOOMED and his radiator and heater will need to be replaced.

What the truth about this sort of error ? Couldn't you use a "super flush" product and clean it all out ?

Your engine isn't DOOMED, but it needs to be flushed as soon. Or overheating may occur. I've used the products you can buy and they work but not as well as the coolant flushing machines dealerships or other places use. But you have to sure your cooling system is pretty stout or you may develop some leaks.

According to the guy at work, his mechanic and the Toyota dealer made it sound as if his engine was now filled with this oozy slime and there was little he could do to stop thing from getting gooped up. They offered a low mileage rebuilt ENGINE at just over $3000 !

As long as he flushes this stuff out, what is the real problem ? He just but in a bit of the green stuff, to top off his system. I figured a few attackes with Prestone Super Flush should get most things out. Is it tougher than that ?

if he used the new formula of Prestone, Zerex, or any other name brand antifreeze, they are now compatible with each other (green and orange).

the guys mechanic and dealership are full of ****.

I would say take the car back home, flush out the coolant really good. Drive it for a few days and then flush it out again, refill it and be on your way. Oh, and don't go back to that place again.

I spoke to the guy today and a local radiator shop. The shop thought it should be flushed out, but found it hard to believe that little mixed formula stuff could be a problem. He said they could flush out his whole system.

The guy called Toyota directly and they said a few system flushes should do the trick. He also did some web surfing and found Toyota uses a RED stuff the should NOT be mixed with any other coolent. SO , I guess it's a THIRD kind of anti-freeze.

I'll let you guys know how this little adventure in coolent goes.

The prior owner of my car mixed coolants and I developed slimy concert in my radiator overflow tank, which keep all my fluid bottled up inside and cause overheating issues.
