How big a problem is it getting at the main seals on a 92 MTX? Got some leaks coming from the front passenger area. Smokes a little when the car heats up. Weird thing is the smoke seems to come up from the far front corner around the battery, not further back where the main seal is and the hot exhaust.

Mechanic says it's an oil leak, but I've also had work done recently on the power steering hoses. I saw some drips coming down off the main seal area, but it's hard to tell if it's oil or PS fluid!

It could be the cam seals or the front main seal. If you search up for a guide on 60K there will be instructions on how to change them all.

Thanks, is this a huge effort if a mechanic does it? Don't really have time for DIY! The guy who checked it out said it would run at least $800, and that's if nothing else breaks, like my Y-pipe.

The front Main seal on the passenger side is easy to change. THis is part of the timing belt, waterpump, cps replacement. 800 is kinda steep even when that does include replacing all of the above mentioned parts. None of the procedure involves even touching the Y-pipe, unless he was talking about replacing your 16.00 oil pan gasket. Buyer beware!

He was going to do the oil pan gasket! He was talking about dropping the Y-pipe and maybe the subframe to get at it? The steering rack was also leaking he said, not sure if the price quoted included the rack. The $800 did NOT include a new Y-pipe!

the "y-pipe is extra" idea has to do with labor. Broken exhaust manifold studs are a common problem with y-pipe removal and they are a PITA to change.

$800 should cover labor for Timing belt,Water pump, CPS, cam sensor/seals, main seal, oil pan gasket(including y-pipe R&R). And since he's down there...rod bearings....make sure he uses motorcraft seals, it's starting to look like the federal mogul seals are junk.

My only advice would be to get all of your parts first. No sence in waiting a week for him to get them and charge you extra.
