I just put a new low coolant sensor in my brother's 89 yesterday. We flushed the coolant and afterwards the light wouldn't go out. The sensor cost 30 dollars used and the light is now out again.

Normally there is a presence of scale/gunk left over in the tank when you flush/change the fluid out. Unless you replace the tank with a new one, the float tends to get stuck in the tank and it doesn't want to slide up and and down as it should and thats where the false reading comes from. As long as the tank is full and you can live with the light on, it'll be fine. Occasionally check the fluid level though just to be sure.

You need to unplug the connector to turn off the light if the sensor is no good. Or buy a new tank. I have one for the cheap. Never installed.
