The SHO has not moved in a couple of months, as it refuses to start. (Except one time when I had people over to help me push it out of the way.) It cranks and cranks, the tach registers RPM, it just never fires. Today I bought a fuel pressure gauge. It shows 0 when the key is on, *** jumps to 10psi when cranking. Obviously, that is a little low. I suppose I should try the fuel filter first, but expect I will need a new pump.

This brings up some questions.
1. Where is the fuel filter? Is it something that can be purchased as a local autoparts store?
2. What fuel pump should I get? I see SHO Brothers have several. Right now the car is a $200 SHO that needs everything. I plan on basic bolt ons, but I don't know if it will ever see FI. Is the 155GHP fine? As long as they are inline price wise, I would like to buy from an SHO vendor.
3. What am I missing? I don't always know what the **** I am doing, so I could be missing something obvious.

Thanks

Kevin

If you need a replacement pump complete with sender unit, Shotime1979 has a very low mileage replacement unit in that 89 I sold him.

I used a replacement Airtex in that one, only had about 10K miles at most on it.

I decided since I could get a fuel filter at Autozone for 7 bucks, I would try that first. I figure I need one anyway. So far, I have been unable to get the old one out. Since the car is dead, it is stuck in a less than ideal spot. I can't jack up the car where it is, so I am trying to replace the filter by feel. I am assuming I should just be able to loosen the clamp on the filter, pull the hoses and slide it out. So far, I have not been able to get the upper hose removed, but will try again tonight.

This car can be such fun. Once I confirm it wasn't the filter, I will tackle the pump.

Well, I replaced the fuel filter this weekend. The car fired right up. I drove it around the block, parked it and cleaned up. I figured I had it licked. I went back out to drive it to a friends, and same thing, cranks, but wont start. I don't get it.

I will retest the fuel pressure. I don't understand why occasionally the pump will pump enough, but mostly it wont.

it's def. the fuel pump. You can go to http://www.shophoenixproject.com for a great write-up on how to do the fuel pump... and you don't have to jack up the car to do it from over the seat.

Also, a word of note, SHOBros is usually a great, reliable vendor, but right now its proprietor is having a lot of rough issues (like, I think he broke a major bone recently, and the other "bro" of SHOBros left...) so orders are mucho backed up right now, and I'm not recommending that you NOT buy from him, but if you need your parts quickly, I would recommend another vendor. RockAuto is a great one.

155lbh is perfect. Any more than that, and it'll overload the pressure regulator, but 155lbh is spot on.

Also, I see you've discovered the fun that is those stupid snap clips on the fuel filter. They suck; I feel your pain.

I just ordered the fuel pump. I didn't get it from SHOBros, but expect to be spending a lot with them in the near to mid future. I need to get the car running, so speed is more important for this part.

Tune up and upgrades will be less time critical.

Now I just have to cut a hole in my floor. At first, I was thinking of using the cutoff wheel I used to cut out the floor pan in my Mustang, but I am afraid of the fuel line. I will have to figure that out. I guess some people use an air hammer. I also need to figure out how to pull the rear seat. I don't expect it to be too hard.

rear seat: Bottom: push toward rear of car, lift front off the hooks that you just freed it from. There you go! That's all you need to do.

I would strongly recommend a dremel and a cut-off wheel (the heavy duty ones, not the reinforced ones!). You will go through 6-8 of them but they're not wide enough to cut the fuel lines even if you try. It will also leave a much cleaner (read: less bloody) cut.

edit: when you push on the seat, make sure you're pushing on the bottom frame of the cushion. Pushing the top will just rip stuff!

I finally got the fuel pump replaced. Cutting the hole in the back wasn't that bad. I need to patch the hole still, but is is good to have the car running again. Of course something else had to break, so the button for the sunroof dissapeared into the overhead.
