Anybody else annoyed that you can only record to the jokebox from an Audio CD that contains maybe 20-23 songs? And it records so slow! 3000 songs 20 at a time is a joke. With all this technology why can’t I insert a CD with 150 MP3's and copy over.
Also, it will not record Audio DVD's. Audio DVD's in 5.1 sound so good on the stock system but you can't copy them to the hard drive. What BS.
I have yet to try and copy from a USB device to the Jokebox but am under the impression it will not work either. What a joke.

Do these cars have a USB diagnostic port in here that we can install our own USB hard drive (say 80gb) and have all my music on that? My dad does this in his F150.
I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 150gb of music and only buy CD's when I really love the music and want the best quality I can get. I do buy a lot of Audio DVD's but the selection is limited.

If I am mistaken at all please let me know what I can do to push more music to the Jokebox faster.

Love my SHO tho.

It will play MP3's off of the USB port, with a memory stick. I tried an 8 and a 16 gig drive, and they both work.

I realize it will play off the USB port in the center console but I want to leave that free to throw a stick of new music on there. If there is a USB diagnostic port under the dash somewhere I believe we can install a permanent hard drive there and still have the free USB port in the center console. Plus without a hard drive in the center console plugged into the USB port there is more room in the console for other things. Just sayin.

Why don't you try it before you criticize? If it doesn't copy them from a USB pen drive or external HDD, it will certainly play MP3s from them, like GigaHz said. The USB port is in the center console next to the Aux jack IIRC. You could just leave an HDD in the center console that could hold way more songs than the Jukebox and play from that. I think it can only recognize files one folder deep though (not sure).

I don't believe the CD drive is a DVD drive either, so of course it won't read audio DVDs. I've actually never even heard of audio DVDs before.

Edit: I wrote my reply before your replay to GigaHz

I don't believe there's another USB port in the dash. I think the one in the center console is all you get. This thing isn't a laptop, yet.

I believe the reason you cannot burn MP3 CDs to the harddrive, or USB files to the harddrive is due to Digital Rights Media restrictions. I've owned a couple of cars from different manufacturers with harddrives and they both functioned this same way.

As for a spare USB port, I'm not aware of one. I haven't heard of anyone yet trying a USB hub in the center console though, that could be interesting to try. If it works, you could then run a USB extension cord down under the seat or something, velcro a portable harddrive to the carpet, and not really lose much space in the center console. I'm not sure what else you'd find yourself trying to plug in to the hub. It seems like maybe it would just make more sense to connect the extension cable, then if you need the USB drive for something else, like updating your Sync, you just unplug the extension cable to the remote-mounted drive and plug your thumb drive in.

There is a second USB port, but it's well hidden. In the Mustang, it's on the Sync module located above the glove box. Adapters and cables must be used to make use of it. Also, you can't select it from the SYNC screen; you have to say "USB2" on the verbal interface.

Don't blame Ford for your inability to transfer anything other than .WAV files to the jukebox. Blame RIAA. SYNC representatives in other forums have confirmed that RIAA is not allowing Ford to let the user put MP3s on the HDD as it "promotes piracy".

I am not blaming anybody. I just think it is a joke the only way to get music on the hard drive is via a CD. Especially with all the TECHNOLOGY here. Does not make sense. Someone at the design phase should have spoken up and said lets make this easier on the consumer.

Is this true of all SYNC systems? Pretty cool if so. I have a few thousand songs on my iPod, but wouldn't mind hooking up a hard drive with my whole music library.

You are transferring audio. Not data. The jukebox has to "listen" to each song, record it, and then file it.

Yes. It is called an iPod.

You must have read past the post where it was said that the RIAA disallowed that functionality from being implemented when Ford asked about it, invoking the DMCA as a reason.

On copying from the DVD, same reason. DVD copying is illegal under the DMCA.

So, in the end, this is all the RIAA's fault.

The Jukebox is a joke for the exact reasons you guys are saying. All they had to do was provide hard drive that can be accessed in the same manner as a USB port. It seems useless to me. I am not going to copy/record audio CD's to the freaking thing and therefore it is useless.

Since I don't like wires in my cars I will not be running a wire from the USB in the center console to another location. Eventually I will find the USB diagnostic port and stick a 80gb hard drive there just like my 65yo dad did in is F150. I bet there is more room in the F150 but if it is a diagnostic port it has to be somewhat reachable.
Then I will have what Ford should have put/bought/licensed/whatever you want to call it. :nut:

Exactly why it is a joke. Useless IMHO and way too time consuming. Could have implemented a better system

My phone has music on it that plays via Bluetooth but is irrelevant to the Jokebox part of the system.

You can look at either the Sync forum, or any of the many Mustang forums (IIRC AFM is where I saw the most complete data) on more details.

What I don't really understand is why people need 150G of music. It just seems like a bit of overkill. It's like people who have 43 cats.

You know I don't understand anything you guys are talking about...just one question, how much music do you listen to in the car? With the help of my son, I have an Ipod hooked into the USB port to listen to selected music, but it seems like you must spend a lot of time in the car to need to have a hard drive for all that music.

Does anyone know where this port might be?
And who's blaming ford, just saying the system they have implemented is a joke compared to what they could have done and what I will do. Probably would have been cheaper for ford with less licensing rules to do what I am going to do.

You go, girl.

I am a dude, think you know that and you are a putz.

I have every single Pink Floyd Album, Every Beatles Album, Every Johnny Cash Album, Every Steely Dan Album, Every ACDC Album, Every Joe Bonamassa Album, Every Modest Mouse Album, Every Doors Album, and the list goes on and on. Puting it on random and hearing all the deep cuts of different music is what I like to do. Get a clue. Why are you attacking? I am deeply disapointed in the Jokebox. Don't take that personally. Are you invested in it?

Someone must know where this port is.

DMCA - Digital Millennium Copyright Act
RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America

The RIAA lobbied hard for the DMCA in it's current state, which essentially made it illegal for Ford/ Microsoft to implement the system in a way that would allow people to easily copy music that isn't DRM (Digital Rights Management) hardened onto or from it. Allowing you to easily copy MP3's onto the system would open them to potential litigation which is something they didn't want, and there you go.

Remember, the RIAA is the same agency that sued a single mom for 10's of Millions of dollars for allegedly sharing some songs on Kazaa or something. Ford might have the resources to defend against any litigation, but why put themselves in that position?

Who says the only thing I want to put on there is music? Maybe I have 10gb of pictures I want to show on the screen? Maybe I create my own music I want to play on there. Maybe I want to download books on tape and put them on there. I need motivational blah blah.....

Computers come with hard drives, phones come with hard drives you can plug into the computer and copy to and from, walk mans (yes they are still being made in digital form), Flash Drives, the list goes on and on.

The auto industy can absoultely install a hard drive in the car that can have anything uploaded to it. It just isn't what the designers thought of.

If we all though like that then we would have to purchase all music for every single device as opposed to copying it from one device to another. Why is the auto industy different from the phone industry? From the IPOD industry? There is always a means of getting something done and I am not impressed with the fact that the only way to get music onto a existing hard drive is to slowly RECORD form a audio CD only.
If it takes about a minute per song (which it does) that is 3000 minutes...That is 50 freakin hours folks. HAVE FUN WITH THAT!:fit:

It's not so much that I need all of it...I just like to have my whole music library available. I listen to a wide variety of music ranging from the mid-60's though today, rock, metal, rap, and some other various types. Different days, I want to hear different stuff.:)
