In a post related to an earlier one here, I"m having some issues. Just beginning today I started to have some trouble. My 1992 MTX refuses to shift into 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear while I'm on the road now. I can get into 2nd, 4th, and reverse without a huge issue, but it has become difficult. I'm not even entirely sure the car engages gears after it's turned off, at least not right after driving it anyway. I'm led to believe it to be the clutch, but I wanted to see if anyone has had a similar situation and what I can do to start checking it out.

I'm having the same problems with mine right now. I changed the tranny fulid out to Mobil 1 and it made a big difference but it's still not right. I'm gonna blame this problem on my crappy motor and subframe mounts. I'm going to pick up Josh's reinforfoced mounts and Bruce's (netviper's) Al sub frame bushings. I'm thinking this should do the trick for me. I'll let you know :thumb:

You say you have an MTX... if you have a rod shifter, you should check the support rod bolt. just get under the car, you can see two rods going from the tranny to the shifter. One actually does the shifting, and the higher up one is a support. The bolt for that has a tendency to back out or break off over time. pretty easy fix if that is the case.

If you have a cable shifter, you might check the adjustment for it, maybe it slipped? don't know much about those myself, though. I'm sure someone else can chime in, or you might find some info in a search.

Good luck either way, and let me know if you have bolt problems, I have extras of those, otherwise you can use 10mm allthread if the bolt's broken.

I had my support bar for the rod shifter disconnected and I didn't know it, if anything you shouldn't be able to hit 2nd and 4th. The reason being when you hit the gas the whole shifter will move back and hit the plastic and then sometime it stays there and you can't go any farther back to it won't get into gear. All I had was 1st, 3rd, and 5th for a few days :) But I don't see how it could be your clutch if it's only doing it for 3 gears, try checking out some other things. Where are you located in Minnesota, I am up in Cloquet right by Duluth and I too have a Silver 92 MTX :thumb: If you happen to have a yahoo or aol screen name what is it?

it got worse

I let the car sit overnight. WHen I went and checked it out in the morning, the shifter wouldn't get into any gear with the car turned on. The shifter will simply spin in the box. When I started the car it got going fine, but after I let off the clutch in what I thought was neutral, it stalled and died. What the heck!? SHO guy, my aim screen name is SlimShadyEMB. I've also got a silver 92 and actually go to school at UMD. Home for the summer but assuming I can fix her I'll have my baby up there with me. What did you end up doing to fix your problem, maybe I can check that out.

Id also check your stabilizer bar, changing the fluid will probably not make it go into those gears, and if you have a '92 dont worry about the cable shifter you dont have it

another fix that might work wonders for some of you

i had my white '91 for almost a year and had a really bad problem with the car not letting me get it into the gears w/o a hard shoving,or if i wanted to get into reverse (gasp.......oh not not reverse.....) i actually had to turn the car off,put it into reverse, then resatrt thge car to go....

a friend of mine's solution ??????

get into the car,w/o it running, push the clutch to the floor, and just slip your foot off of it to the side.

if you are doing this procedure correctly, when you push in the clutch and hold it to the floor, then release it,your foot will slip right off of the clutch pedal and onto the carpeting of the floor/firewall area. ( i.e. the clutch pedal will fly by your foot when released back to it's fully out position)

this truly does work if you are having a doubt as to if it might be an engaging/disengaging clutch issue.
also, i did try the "pull up on the clutch pedal trick" and i didn't get that to work at all for me.

anyway, there is my .02 cents
