NEED to warm up before driving? This is the only fault I have with my sho (other than it is only driven by 99 donkeys)
If I start it up and immediately put it into gear, it will hesitate real bad, almost stall, and buck just a tad (all for the first 20 feet or so, and then be fine). But if I let it warm up a few minutes, all is well!
I am only asking because my sho has such a power loss problem and this is the only complaint I have (besides its SLO). Is this a sign of running rich, or does this help to identify any culprits? Etc...

My 89 with 206K miles does that from a cold start. One minute of idling, and nursing it for another minute or two and it runs fine.

Ditto on my 89 after an engine, trans, clutch swap. New IAC & all sensors, too. I never got the car driving (ran, but grenaded trans) before the above mentioned items.

My old girl does the same thing. I've just noticed those symptoms recently now that the weather has cooled a bit. I am guessing that the fuel is not getting adequately burned in the rich open-loop mode before the engine warms up.

I've been wondering that same thing for a year now. I just never could part with the cash to find out.

My 89 has done that since purchased new back in 1990. Of course, repeated trips to the dealer never fixed anything. I've just gotten used to letting it idle for about 30 seconds and then all is well. From the sounds of it, there's no easy fix. Just plan for an extra 1 minute of travel time!!

I agree Yamaha V6. My 93 never has this type of problem. Start her up cold and she's ready to go. No hesitating or anything. Maybe it's something that they fixed when they redesigned the body in 92? I don't know, that's just a stab in the dark

So what's unique to the Gen 1...
Heads were redesigned later, Starter & Solenoid, computers - B9B, B9B1, L0S (anyone with a Gen 1 & an X2J running into this?) Coil pack is slightly different, I believe (check the plug key offset - centered vs offset).

89 had a different DIS #, but this spans all gen 1 years. I have a new style (& new) IAC so, that's not likely to be it. I'm also running 95 heads on mine. Manual climate control on mine. Cruise is removed, as is A/C system.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this?

I give my 92 a couple of minutes to warm up on a
cold start before pulling away. Throttle response is very sluggish otherwise.

my 93 ATX never had this problem yet my 90 does. I was hoping maybe it was my spark plug tube seals for some reason? Gotta get time to change'em

My car did this until I did one simple thing: Cleaned and/or replaced the MAF sensor. As soon as I put in a new MAF, all those problems have disappeared. Some food for thought! thumbs_u

My 89 has never done this. Start her up and she's ready to go. Never did it when my mom bought her new. Never did it at 145,000 miles when she badly needed her first 60K. 22 degree winter day, 100 degree summer day it has never made a difference.
Maybe there *is* something about California cars that makes them more valuable when they're used!

Already cleaned the MAF, Chris. So, that's not my problem anyway. I've yet to try an aftermarket one though.

Funny, it's all the 89-91 years so far, of those who have responded.
You can add my 247,000 mile 92 to the list. Cleaning the MAF sensor helped, but did not totally cure it.

A few years ago during a troubleshooting session I filed thsoe keys off the connectors on both my 92 and 95 and swapped them. Never put them back, been running fine since then,,problem on 92 was a CCRM. So apparently the only significant difference it the location of the connector keys.

The only time I ever saw a problem on startup was when I had a weak fuel pump. Since I replaced it 2 years ago, I have not encountered the same symptoms, other than when I forgot to plug the car in at noght. With the kind of cold winters I've seen up here I'm surprised that I haven't.
