instrument panel, radio and ac controls, etc., don't illumine

It does this SOME of the time. The headlights come on, but nothing else does.
The interior is completely dark. The exterior, to my knowledge, has ONLY the
headlights on... no parking lights and no lights in the rear. What could be the
problem?
Sometimes, out of the clear blue, everything will start working again.

That would be the headlight switch I assume. It has a wire for the the parking lamps which also feeds the solid state dimmer for the instrument and switch lighting.
