I am putting in a newer R-134 compressor and new lines on my old R-12 outfitted 91 SHO.

How much oil should I put in the compressor and how much (if any) should I put in the drier? I've put on all new hoses, condensor and drier/filter. Someone posted a link that showed 8.5 ounces total, but someone else said to spread it around the system. Do you just pour it into the compressor's suction side or is there an oil fill hole? I don't see one.

Thanks for any advice.

the way I was shown, was to bring the system under a vac. Find how much the system needs (IIRC, the rule of thumb is 2oz.s per part, so to for the compressor, 2 for the condensor, etc... but i dont know if thats the same with convereted systems using a ester oil) and fill the bottle with that amount. Most bottles have a gauge on the side of them showing how many oz.s are in it. Then stick the yellow(middle) hose from the manifold gauges into the bottle submergining it in the oil. which has allready been measured. then open the valve (low side i believe) and alow the oil to be sucked through th manifold into the system. once the required amount of oil is in the system close the system so that no air can get in.

I think thats correct....

EDIT: also, you could turn the car on, and jump a low pressure swtich, so that the compressor will kick on, pushing some of the oil through the system. But only jump it for a couple seconds.... I think thats another part of it... but that may be to get all of the freon out. :nut: cant recall. so dont qoute me, or dont try it, unless someone else backs it.

Tom,
With all new parts the system takes a TOTAL of NO MORE than 8 ounces of refrigerant oil. The compressor should have 3 to 5 ounces in it and it is added through the suction port while turning the compressor shaft clockwise (5 ounces max - I usually add 3oz [minimum] to 4ozs to the compressor). Add an ounce to the condenser, an ounce to the filter/dryer and an ounce to the oriface tube. If the evaporator core was cleaned out you can squirt a little into it also, but remember no more than 8 ounces.

Just a side note: There is no such thing as an R-12 or R134a compressor. The compressor will compress whatever refrigerant is put into the system. The seals, "O" rings, are different and R-134a compatable "O" rings must be used for R-134a. Other than that the components of the A/C system are identical.

Ranger J,

Yeah I found that out by doing a lot of searches. I had two reasons to change out the compressor. My 91 Minus had an open system for a few days, and someone gave me a compressor off of a 12,000 mile Bondurant motor that he put in his buggy. Thanks for the amount info, that's what I was looking for. Thanks again.

there is no need to change the compressor if the system has been opened. the receiver/dryer, yes.

Agreed, but I have a 12,000 mile compressor and a 110, 000 mile compressor and don't know which one to use. So I chose the low mileage one.
