I'm not getting any codes and I've sprayed nearly a whole can of WD40. After painting my intake my idle is terrible?? I did not paint where the DIS is and don't believe I painted where the ground bolt is? I had today off and fiddled with it and it ran perfectly for a bit so I went inside. Came out a few hours later and started it and the idle was poor again and it backfired a little bit? Suggestions please!!??

On a side note, the intake looks great!! My car is crimson red and I painted the outside red and did the pipes black. It really makes the engine look great!!! Oh, if it matters my car is a 95 ATX with 118k miles on it. Thanks all for your suggestions.

I vote for a vacuum leak. First check all the hose connections. If it is not a hose, it could be from a leak when you reassembled the intake. Any left over gasket material will cause a problem. Also, when you reinstall the intake, keep all the hose clamps loose until the intak is fully bolted down, that will make sure it is seated and sealed.

If it is none of that, check to make sure your butterflies are not stuck open, and that you got the MAF, TPS and air temp sensor plugged in.

Just a quick guess.

Thanks guys, I'm betting on the intake just not being seated right. I had tightened the couplings up before I set the intake in place and really had to force the bolts in. I will loosen everything up and try it again tonight. The odd thing is that sometimes it runs perfect, but most of the time it idles poorly with hesitation and bad acceleration off the line. Once it gets going it is better and the butterflys work fine so no worries there. I hate vacuum issues!!!

....did you make sure all the gaskets were in place before you put the intake back together? I did that, and my car ran like shit for two days...had to put the crappy surge tank on cuz it still had the gasket intact.

I'm buying the butterfly gaskets today. When I did the painting I actually did break one of the gaskets. I'm hoping this will take care of the issue. What do you guys think?

So I replaced the butterfly gaskets, got it all buttoned up and it would not even start?? After several hours of fiddling with it I finally got it to start but it's running more horribly than before?? It won't hardly idle at all and it backfires and spits, I can even smell gas smell coming out the tailpipe? I replaced the cam position sensor thinking it was than and nothing. I took it all apart again hoping to find something used some gasket stuff to make sure the couplings weren't causing a vacum leak and it still won't run much at all. Guys I really need some advice.

I'm an idiot!! My neighbor took a look at my car last night and said it sounded like one of the cylinders wasn't firing. I hadn't done anything with the plugs or wires and they are Motorcraft and were replaced 6 months ago. However, I did hose the engine down before I replaced the butterfly gaskets because it was really hot. Well, I took the front three plug wires off and the left two were a bit damp, but the drivers side plug was completely under water. Long story short the car is running like a champ now.
