Hey guys. I recently had my first oil sample analyzed for my 93. After only about 4,400 miles, the test indicated high amounts of lead. Should I be gearing up for a rod bearing change? Or maybe wait another 3,000 miles and send in a second sample?

The car currently has 82,054 miles on it and 5w-30 Mobil 1 High Mileage was used, with a MotorCraft Oil filter.

Thanks guys C:

If you're not detecting a knock I bet you could wait. That is low miles plus it's an automatic which are typically less ******* the internals. I would plan on it before winter and think about whether the synth is or isn't thick enough

^x2. When I had my '95 ATX rod bearings done at around 110K, a little copper was showing on a couple of them, still had a ways to go if I wanted to. Of course, I had owned it since new, so I knew the service history. At least keep a fresh set on hand.

Try using Castrol 5w30 instead, then Castrol HM 5w30. Castrol vs Mobil 1 PDS:

You need to establish a trend for oil analysis to have value. I concur with Blackstone; check back after another oil change.

Well we know bearing wear is an issue and you have a high lead PPM in the sample. Better safe than sorry so I would budget time and/or money to get them changed out before the weather turns too cold if you are going to do the job yourself. Sodium looks high but it looks like some of that can be an oil formulation factor. I've used Mobil 1 but don't always stay with the same brand and I think their formulation changed some time ago.

I see the Castrol has a higher viscosity than the Mobil 1 but I have not educated myself on all the factors that make a superior oil. Looking into it might be a good idea someday. Where's Paul Nimz? He used to spend time looking at this stuff.

when the engine is hot, at idle does the oil light ever flicker?
does the engine knock/clatter for a couple seconds at startup?
when you change oil, how many seconds does it take for the oil light to go off?

if you are getting no oil light flicker ever, and if you do not get clatter at startup, then I would carry on and wait for another oil change or two to see what is going on.

if you do get clatter and / or oil light flicker, then I would either go up to a 5W40 (or 0W40, which I actually prefer) or else get ready to change bearings.

out of all the SHOs that I have owned, one of the 94 atx cars needed 5W40 to keep from an occasional oil light flicker at idle and to keep from clattering at startup. since it was about #8 at the time, I knew from the sound of the engine that it was just a little looser than it should have been. however, it ran perfectly fine with 5W40 for years before I sold it to some guy who just had to have it and then I lost track of it.

Thanks again guys for the input.

This is what I think I'll do. I'll let the car go it 3k OCI, then change the oil. Send in the oil sample and if it still shows higher amount, rod bearing it is.

Then again. I have all the items needed to do a Rod Bearing change. I got all the stuff awhile ago, thinking I was going to do them. But honestly the job just intimidated me. Lol. So, Idk what I'll do yet. And god only knows what I'll do about changing the type and viscosity of oil. Time for some research!

Oh and heres a ****** Oil Test of some Mobil 1 Hm 5w-30, if anyones interested.http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...13/Mobil_1_5W-30_High_Mileage_Vir#Post3311913

P.S., my car has never shown the oil pressure light. And I know it works because it lights up on start up. However, I do have a slight tap on start up. Whether or not thats the timing chain tensioner that's going bad in one of the heads, idk. Maybe I'll post a quick video.

Peace out.

Oil quickly becomes an emotional subject, however, if you use Castrol 5W-30 or Castrol 5W-30 HM, you will get excellent service from your SHO. I switched from Mobil 1 to Castrol at 150K. sdpatt on here has over 400K on his SHO running Castrol 5w-30. 'nuf said.
