Yes it's a five speed manual transmission (takes gear oil)

So your car is a 5 speed? The fluid in the tranny is not gear oil, its automatic transmission fluid. You can do a search on this forum to see what others have used. In the post below, Ron found gear oil worked best in his tranny.

The temperature gauge sensor could be bad, but if you don't know when the thermostat was changed, then it might be a good idea to replace it.

No that is not correct. The Ford manual lists

for manual transaxle

Also with an MTX car at this mileage I would change the rod bearings sooner rather than later unless it was done already.

These cars do not use gear oil. The MTX (5 Speed) uses Mercon automatic transmission fluid.

Nah. We know better because we've owned one of these for a long long time. My first guess would have been gear oil like my older manual cars I owned back in the day.
Seriously if the rod bearings haven;t been changed at this high a mileage you should do them. They can be done with engine in the car dropping the y pipe and oil pan

Chilton won't really help with the SHO motor or manual trans if memory serves. It's been a long time since I looked at one. You need to get a used Ford shop manual like these--shop around on ebay for a good price

You can get most of the normal Taurus stuff that is common with the SHO sub-model from Chiltons ---but SHO engine and transmission info is usually separate and you need at least the #2 SHO specific one.
