What is the best trans fluid to use in an 89 SHO? I will be installing a Quaife LSD, do I need a friction modifier as well?

GM Synchromesh has often been mentioned as a favorite for the MTX.

Have not heard of the need for a LS additive or anything like that with a Quaife installed. Link to the product

Josh at SHOnutperformance.com is worth talking to about these questions tho I am sure our venerable forum members will step up to the plate :)

Many Many past threads on this, and as many opinions! I've tried a few, and settled on Mobil 1 as the most consistent performer over the long haul.

Editing post to clear up any confusion: Mobil 1 ATF

    NOT Mobil 1 motor oil!

So you went with a motor oil instead of the ATF? I read on here that the Quaifes like ATF fluid but haven't seen anything about friction modifiers being used

Mobil and Mobil 1 offer many lubricants for different applications. motor oil, gear oil, ATF etc

This is one of those "ask 10 people, get 10 answers" type of question. The "correct" answer seems to vary from trans to trans, some work better with one oil, others with another.

You do not want a friction modifier in there.

And the 89 trans, with the brass synchros, likes gear oil But the synchromesh has worked for people,, so that could be the way to go with a Quaife. I also remember Redline MTL (sp?) being a favorite back in the day.

That's good to know. I am not familiar with the Mobil line of products.

All I really know is that everyone on craigslist selling a car has changed the oil every 3000 miles with Mobil 1 :)

So the 89 trans likes gear oil? Was ATF the correct fluid for the car when new?

ATF is listed in the 89 shop manual. States that you should use either Motorcraft type F or Motorcraft Dextron II. You can use other fluids but these are the ones specifically stated in the manual.
And, if you own an 89, you should get the SHO specific shop manual from ebay. I saw some super cheap used ones on there last week. Well worth a few dollars.

    No!

Dexron is GM fluid! Spec is Ford Mercon.

But as I've found on worn MTX trannies, try different fluids to see what they like. I had a supposed 90k+ used MTX that was only happy with cheap AZ Coastal gear oil after Mobil 1 ATF and Synchromesh were not good.

I agree that Dextron is associated with GM fluid, but if you look in the 89 service manual 16-37-52 under fluid check it states if low add Motorcraft Type F or Motorcraft Dextron II or equivalent.

Have I ever seen MC Dex II? No, but it's in the ford manual.

Sorry but it's not. I went and looked at the skinny SHO specific manual earlier. Here's from the 89 manual. Specs page 50-03-5

Yes we looked at different pages. If you look at the specific page I referenced my info from, it is correct (as a quote not as a fluid). I would trust the lubrication table info.

I have no idea, I've never had one of the LSDs in a SHO. If there's a specific ATF recommendation for let's say, the Quaife, it may be too heavy. But if a Synchromesh fluid is okay so would MTL

If you look at their site, Redline has a number of different synthetic lubricants.
