I finally purchased my very first SHO. I'm an ex- Ford Mechanic, so I have

some knowledge of these cars. I just purchased this SHO today. I drove it

home from where I purchased it. The owner did tell me that the car has an

occasional issue no start issue. He said if you drive the car, get it warm,

shut it off and come back about an hour later, it has trouble starting and

idling. When I first looked at it, it had a hard time starting. I found

that when I got it to run, gave it some gas, it stumbled for about 30 seconds

or so, then cleared up, and idled fine. The car seems to have a stumble to it

under heavy load, and more noticable coming in at around 3500 RPM. So I

made about a 40 mile trip home with it, and now I can't get it to stay

running. He's replaced the fuel pump 4 times, and still having the same issue.

On my home, taking off out of a toll, I gave it some, and it started to

stumble. Also I noticed that when I sat at a light, or at a toll at idle, the car

would initially stumble a bit when taking off with a light load, then clears up.

Any ideas? The car starts, runs rough, then wants to die. I'm thinking its a

fuel related issue, but I don't know these SHO's too well yet. It's a 1993

SHO, MTX 5spd with a 3.0L. Any help, would greatly be appreciated. This is

a daily driver and project for me....as I've always wanted one. The car ran

great at cruising speeds, it just seem to stumble as I pushed the throttle

down more. MAF maybe?

talk with him and ask him what pump is in there. I think if it is an autozone pump then some people were having trouble with them as they don't last.

ask him if a walbro is in there.

Hi Jim
Has the fuel filter been replaced? Hows fuel pressure at the rail? Vacuum leaks?
Fuel filter has been replaced, probably has less than 100 miles on it.

Fuel pump was out of a friends car that was known to work. James in STL suggests either a cam sensor or fuel sending unit as we put in a pump that only lasted approx a year, so the sending unit may be eating the pumps.

Hey Steve. I just got it started again, and took it for another ride. Was fine at a light load, but when I got into the pedal more, it stumbled. Your white SHO is pure bad ass!! I'm going to try a few things, including a new sender.

By the way, my wife was in a hurry.....where did you get that shifter you had in the white SHO? I'd like to get an aftermarket shifter for the car.:swing:

1st thing to do is always to check for codes. are there any?

your issue could easily be a tps that is bad, but there are other candidates too, so we need to check codes.

^ That's what I was thinking. I'm not a fan of throwing parts at a car but at $30 and 30 min. of your time; might be good to swap it out and see if that does anything for you. I would do that, clean my MAF, and of course, check the codes like they said.

Job 1 is learn how to get codes, I think a code reader is the easiest method.
Job 2 is make sure 5 & 6 wires aren't mixed up.
Job 3 is clean the wire on the MAF unt. There is a trick to this, so search it out
Job 4 is price a cam sensor, a TPS, and maybe coils now, but only purchase after job 1 is understood and done.

The very first thing I'm going to do is check codes. The next thing I'm going to do is pick up some CFC FREE electrical contact spray and clean out the MAF. Everyone on here, and at work says check codes, so that's what I'm going to do. I bought this car from Steve, and I know he knows his SHO's. It's probably something really stupid. I will get this figured out, and let you guys know what I come up with as far as codes, and the problem. Thanks for all of the help, you guys are very knowledgeable! I'm a member of CTR, and you guys have helped me out more here than any other Forum I've been on.

I like how all you guys can diagnose an issue. This problem did not start until I removed the 155lph fuel pump from the tank. Pull the FP out, and take a really close look at the sending unit where the wire go through it. My best guess is a bad ground for the fuel pump at the sender.

PS, I have about 40-60 hours of wrenchtime in that ole turd.
