I Am A Proud (gulp!) Owner Of A 1995 Sho, Silver/auto/grey Leather/122,000k. It Has Has A Check Engine Light That Has Been Coming On During Driving. If I'm Sitting With The Car In Park And I Pat The Accelerator, The Car Shuts Off. It Drives Fine For The Most Part With An Occasional Shut Off Every Now And Then. I Own A 1988 Trans Am Gta In Which I Know How To Get The Trouble Codes From. I Know Nothing About Fords. Could Some Help Me Get The Code And/or Tell Me What Might Be My Problem? Any Feedback Would Be Highly Appreciated.

sometimes when i start my car, it will idle around 1200-1500 rpm...then it will chug back down to about 600..and eventually steady at 900... (ofcourse sometimes it just stalls).

anyways, when the engine is idling high, if i touch the gas, it will instantly stall.

i'm going to try cleaning the IAC (idle air control) valve this weekend, and see if it fixes the problem.

(Odd coincidence, within two days of getting a CEL -code stored was for an O2 sensor- i noticed the eratic idle and stalling...related perhaps?)

EDIT: Another link for checking codes, a very easy to understand page with a cute little animation of a flashing Check Engine Light

I second the TPS....there could either be a dead spot on the band OR the unit is bad...when I drove my car after unplugging the TPS (to check it) it definitely fell FLAT on it's face as soon as I accelerated...oooops....I thought I had a surging problem...must have been in my right foot ...

Or you could just not do THAT...Are you fooling the computers{s}, how are your spark plugs? If the car is shutting down during NORMAL driving get it checked, by someone with the proper equipment.

I'm Not Fooling My Computer(s). My Spark Plugs Are Questionable. I Bought It With About 86k And Haven't Done Anything Major Besides Brakes, Oil & A K&n Air Filter. I Would Like Get A Tune Up But I Would Be Bitter If I Spent Money & The Problem Still Exists. I'd Like To Know Where These Sensors Are On My Engine. Does Anyone OffER Diagrams On Them? If So, Please Post Them For Me. Your Help Has Been Greatly Appreciated So Far.

It Shouldn't Be My 02 Sensors. The Car Idles Fine. It Just Dies If I Stomp The Accelerator While In Park.

How Do I Adjust The Throttle Position Sensor Voltage? I've Been A Backyard Mechanic At Times But This Is Something I've Never Done Before On Any Vehicle Whether Ford Or Gm.

You have to extract the trouble codes from the EEC for us to help you out. Use the link posted above. :thumb:

Sorry about the caps thing. I usually use all caps when I'm texting/im'ming & such. for some reason this forum doesnt recognize all the caps, just the first letter of each word! I know I look like some kind of freak on this board to y'all, lol. Trust me however, I'm a normal guy with S H O problems like the rest of y'all. lol. B T W, I will make it my business to extract the codes here soon enough.

Definitely get back to us with your codes, but if I were to guess, I'd jump on the TPS bandwagon as well.

And you said it dies when you pat the accelerator, and later said it happens when you stomp the accelerator. Does it happen with both conditions, or either or?

i've extracted the codes. I got 116 and then i got 636. Stomp/pat...it shuts off with any quick change in idle while only in park. If someone knows what these codes are please let me know and if there is a breakdown of codes on a website or such that would be a big help for me in the future. I didnt put them in my profile but my Y I M is butta4pioneers and my A I M is njpioneersmcpr. Use at your will.

From the TCCA DTC list:

116 (O,R) Engine Coolant (ECT) sensor out of range - ECT
636 (O,R) Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) sensor out of range - Transmissions

The last time I got those codes at the same time, it was because the battery voltage went waaaaaaay low because the car had sat for some months. Check out your starting and charging systems, to make sure the alt and battery are in good shape. Then disconnect your negative battery cable for 20 minutes, clean the terminals, reconnect, start the car, and see what happens.

That may be about right. the car sat for a few months. I brought it to a guy who basically charged it enough to change a starter on it and get it back up and running. I will clean the posts this weekend and give it another shot. Man! I can't wait for the riding season to kick in good (1999 zx-11.) That's when the four wheeled toys collect dust. Thank you for your advice. You should know my outcome by Friday or so.
