Im half way, got the heads off and cleaned everything up really well. Started to clean up the Ex manifolds for a paint. Cleaned up the engine bay and checked the P/S pump which looks good and the so does the Water pump.

Gonna do some work on the heads, does anyone if opening up around the intake valves and removing the wire edge around the cylinder/combustion chamber is an alright thing to do? im not talking about in major grinding, just smoothing up small stuff. Just some old tricks my dad was asking about that he had done back in his day.

Looks like fun.

I would replace that water pump while you have it all apart. They are cheap enough and it is basically taken off already! I'd also replace the PCV hose in the middle of the block.

Are you planning on doing the head work yourself? What wire edge are you talking about? The head should be flat. I would let a good machine shop who is familiar with the heads look at them. SHO heads can't be shaved a whole lot before they are unusable.

^ +1 on all that.

I could also provide a good home for the lonely Cougar that is just sitting there.....

If the heads are in good shape, I would just gasket match them to the intake and not mess with the rest. The SHO heads flow well in stock form and I would worry about making them flow worse by experimenting with them.

The heads are gasket matched and lightly ported when i bought them from SHO AMO.

The wire edge im talking about is on the edge of the combustion chamber. Where it meats the block and goes vertical. What i plan on doing is something that could be done with a steady hand and sand paper its not a major change.

if you see in the pic around the combustion chamber is a sliver lip and, and from casting there is a small edge almost like casting flash.

Head Comparison3

And as for the 1969 Cougar is a MEAN sucker. 351 stroked to 377 with eddlebrock heads, and ECC IV, Brothers BBK Throttle and air meter, J4J1 computer, competition cam,s Keith black pistons, and the list goes on.

I agree. Im not even a teenager anymore. They are unique cars. People are allowed to have their own tastes do do what they please.

also to hear the motor start screaming over 4000Rpm's

Did you lap the valves? By far one of the best things to do is lap them to the seats. The idle quality alone is well worth it.

Nope. Watch.

It creates a perfect seal between the rear of the valve face and the valve seat. Did that to the valves in an engine and there is definitely a difference. The idle quality alone is so much better. The tool and the paste run about 10 dollars.

If anyone decides to do it, you don't need to sit there for a long period of time grinding down the valves. The valve is done when the back of the face and the valve seat have a shiny even ring that goes all around the circumference. Best 10 dollars I've ever spent and well worth the time.

Do Hand Lap Your Valves

There is a lot of power in the correct valve job. I actually believe that a three angle valve job on both the intakes and the exhausts, followed by hand lapping is going to make as much power as anything you can do to your motor and particularly these Yamaha motors.

It should, if done correctly, be worth 25 horsepower. I don't know of any other single performance part that can do that. All you need is lapping compound and the tool.

The three angle valve job costs more, but if you have the heads off, then it would be worth it. Find someone that knows what they are doing and you might get it for about $125.00.

Used to know drag racers that hand lapped valves after every 25 passes.

your not gonna get 25 hp by 3 angle valve job and lapping the valves... maybe.... maybe 2 hp... get oversized valves stage 2 cams you might see 30 hp gain... the intake and low lift cam will always hinder these engines... even stage 2 cams dont have as much lift as most stock engines anymore... if i remember correctly its was like .390 lift? these heads flow the best at .500+ lift

Impossible to have a 500 lift cam that was not a custom made camshaft. Reground cams
Pretty much are maxed out at .390

yes... they would have to be custom cams... someone did head flow on here sometime ago with a flowbench and the heads flowed the best at .500 + lift
