I'm trying to take my driver-side half shaft out. Everything I've read says to just pull it out by the inboard CV. When I tug on it I can move it back and forth in the tranny but it won't pull out. What am I missing?

Stick a screwdriver or prybar between the trans and axle then pry alittle. It will pop out then.

A small prybar, and a quick pry will pop it loose. ****, I used a pickle fork to get mine out.

Its got a clip on the end so you need to follow the advice above. Prybar and a quick pop should get her. Are you replacing the shaft?

Not replacing. The boot ripped and sprayed all of the outboard CV grease out. I'm sending it back to Raxles to have them inspect it and replace the boot. The less damage I do to it the better. :)

Man, you were not kidding about the prying. I got it off after about five minutes of changing position with the ball joint remover and some serious pushing and pulling. Thanks for the help!

I find a 18mm-19mm wrench works as a great prybar on those, without damaging anything. And I've usually got one of each sitting in front of me anyway while doing that job. I just stick the open end of the wrench between the inboard joint and the transmission body and push/pull on the end of the wrench and it's usually out within a few seconds.

I'm back!

I'm trying to remove the passenger side now. Alldata says to use a halfshaft adapter and a slide hammer. As luck would have it I do not have that tool in kit. I can't really see a way to pop a prybar between the intermediate shaft bearing and the inboard CV. Ideas?

I just remove the intermediate shaft bearing from the mount bracket and pop the whole shebang out of the transmission the same way I did the driver's side. No adapter or slide hammer needed.

Just give the intermediate shaft a few good sharp tugs, and it should pop right out.

Whaaa, adapters and slide hammers?

Nope, do what Jon said. Take out the two 10mm headed bolts that hold the carrier bearing to the engine, then it should just pull right out of the transmission.

Okay, I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

You can also take the bearing bolts out and drive around! Thatll pop it right out for ya. Ask me how I know lol and no I didnt do this but as luck would have it I have experienced that happening.

Both at once??

Hope you aren't pulling both of the half-shafts out at once without supporting the innards of your tranny. I seem to have read a thread or two on here cautioning such a move. Also seem to recall something along the line of a broom handle inserted into the tranny to keep all the internals where they belong.
Hopefully someone will chime in with firsthand knowledge soon....

I think I've heard that before too, but I've pulled both at once with no replacement support at least a couple times and suffered no ill effects.

****, when's the last time you saw pic of an MTX trans sitting on a garage floor with a broomstick (or similar) hanging out of it?

The diff is supported at both ends by tightly-clearanced bearings in cups built into the case-- I don't think it's going anywhere.

When doing a clutch job you also remove both. I dont think it would cause an issue.

Don't sweat it. Nothin' wrong with trying to warn someone before they screw up something important. You know around here, if you're wrong about something, someone will definitely chime in to let you know. ;)

Yeah, I definitely had both sides out. For a good five years or so. Still shifts too!

This time however, one at a time. I found that the greater the amount of dis-assembly I do, there is a relational rise in the amount of time it takes to put it all back together again. When I started this I told myself: I'll just build and install these struts and springs and have nice happy suspension! Then I take my wheel off and put my hand in CV grease...

Anyway, I took the two 10mm bolts off with a little combination wrench and tugged on the intermediate shaft and it came out after about a minute: easy as pie. I'm glad much smarter people than me or on this forum!
