You can head off to Toms place and help me tear apart the SHO! Need to install a different crank. As much as I'd like to toss in a different motor, this motor has too much done to it to be replaced by a stock 3.0. I'm not sure if the pistons will work with a 3.2. I think there's a different in wristpin locations on the 3.0 to 3.2. Could be wrong. Might have been slight, but I believe it had something to do with the slightly longer block.

Sooo.. I need to find a way to support the motor, pull the trans and subframe. The bottom end of the motor is already taken apart minus the bearing caps. Will remove the crank pulley and timing sprocket before removing any of the other parts. I'll buy beers for those willing to help. If you wanna watch, you're more than welcome to.. but bring your own damn beer! Hahaha, sorry! I'm on a tight budget.

Link above is what this crank/rod swap are all about.

Neno,

Would it be easier, and more likely to yield more reliable results, to pull the engine out to do this work?

And when is this work to take place?

no and no. Pulling the engine on a gen 1 requires removal of harnesses that dont simply unplug from what I know of. Besides that, I really dont want o yank the engine out. The crank will be installed, oil pan left off, trans reinstalled along w/ subframe and the head will then be removed to r&r the connecting rod through the top of the shortblock. Getting the crank checked out first. Haven't gotten this together yet, but hoping tomorrow may lead to some productivity. Picking up a couple extra OT shifts to try and make my budget not dwindle into a pile of credit card bills.. just after stepping out of that crap. Damnit.

Man, I vote for pulling the motor. The engine harness will completely detach from the chassis harness. As Monk would say, "You'll thank me later." You do not want to try to install a crank with the motor in the car.

Let me find out when Kirk is planning his next trip out there. As long as all the parts are there everything could be done in a long day if I had that much time before he left me stranded. :nut:

The other thing, honestly, if it were me, is just stick a piece of crap junkyard motor in there for now, and take a little time and slow down the budget to get the 3.2 back together and squared away and then put it back in later.

Well since im lef to do the left cylinder head gasket, I figured on doing both head gaskets. At that point, I'm thinking a valve job is in order for the heads, possibly new chains and tensioners. I'm not planning on half-assing the job, it's just that any debt I create now will definitely not be paid within a year and that'll = bad times when Im looking at financing my way into medic school. Just bad timing.

Luke, this weekend will be utilized to remove the crank/rod from the salvage motor. Taking that to a machine shop first to see what the condition of it is looking like.

If you guys find the fridge overflowing with beer I have a pump designed to process a significant amount of gallons per hour. I'll be happy to swing by and let Tom use it for a while.

You might want to consider balancing your entire rotating assembly with that new crank. Of course that means you'll need to remove the heads; it's probably time and expense that you can't/don't want to deal with right now. Can you get a hold of a random SHO engine to swap in so you can do as Chris suggested and take your time with the 3.2? It's a SHOshop motor with JE's, right?

He's comming by Sat am to pull the crack out of my garage motor to have it looked at. Money for school, to make more money for his job is waaaaay more important imo (so is getting my yard back lol) Also this is a california car and one of the problems he has is all the wiring is dry and brittle, it's like old plumbing. IDK we'll see

well look slike I bumped into one **** of a problem! I need to find a shop (semi-local.. like, less than 50mi away..) to rebalance my rotating assembly by.

As an update, those who are interested in knowing what's going on, I've been placed in a questionable position knowing that the motor is internally balanced. I guess I have little choice but to get the rods/pistons/crank rebalanced together. In this case, the only benefit is replacing both the head gaskets and getting to the valve stem seals on a workbench rather than on the car. Either way, I'm not exactly excited about this! Arrgg..

I was wondering if anyone would happen to have a engine support rig they wouldn't mind me borrowing/renting from them? I want to tear this car down as much as possible/as soon as possible. I'm starting to feel like an ass having this damn car nesting many baby rabbits in toms drive!!

I don't have an engine support, but I do have a cherry picker you could borrow, if you're willing to drive down to Kankakee to pick it up.

You know I got the stuff here and a trailer to haul it to you.

I was down in Mt. Vernon for my BBQ teams opening event over the weekend, we took 36th out of a field of 40...! tough competition!

LMK when you want it delivered.

i needed a engine bay support cradle. Didn't want to pull the motor out. Took the heads off today and removed my pistons along with the connecting rods. About 5hrs of work. Not too shabby. All by myself with one (1) beer in my fuel lines... I took some pics with my cell phone!

Notice all that rust.. that's what happens when your motor freezes over winter. Oops!

Sooo small!

PIC-0059.jpg

All that blackness between the engine, axle and firewall is Tom's driveway. Wish it was this clear all the time!

PIC-0060.jpg

The JE pistons..

PIC-0061.jpg

Time to install a new manifold stud, clean up the coolant passages, clean out all that crap built up on them, replace my cam seals annnnd replace the valve stem seals!

PIC-0062.jpg

Yuck!

Yuck x3!

spun a rod bearing. motor spun as smooth as silk despite the lower bearing cap having slipped into the upper cap and the crank was chewing the rod cap. And i mean, super easy to turn. The motor would start up in less a couple seconds, spinning the crank via the pulley bolt proved absolutely not resistance. Either way, she'll be alive again and hopefully running better than ever!
